Izquierda Unida denounces a religious act in Tenerife where homosexuality is equated with cannibalism

Canarian United Left (IUC) has denounced the celebration of a act of charismatic renewal catholic officiated by the parish priest of the church of Nuestra Señora de la Luz, in Guía de Isora, in Tenerifein which the homosexualitydy the bisexuality with the rape or the cannibalism.

In a statement, the national coordinator of IUC, Luisa Tamayo, considers that these types of “acts of resignation” are susceptible to a hate crime against the LGTBI collective and appeals to the ecclesiastical and civil authorities to investigate these events and take “ the necessary measures.”

It details that in said act of renunciation, the parish priest asks a series of questions directed to the parishioners, urging them to renounce “all lust, abortion, adultery, homosexuality, bisexuality, incest, rape, pornography, bestiality, promiscuity and prostitution.” “It is unacceptable that in the 21st century, attitudes that encourage discrimination and hatred towards the LGBTI community continue to be promoted. These acts are not only contrary to the values of equality and respect, but also contradict the teachings of love and acceptance that should prevail in any religious community,” says Tamayo.

Luisa Tamayo explains that these acts “also go against the recent statements of Pope Francis himself, who stated that homosexuality is not a Catholic crime.”

For this reason, he considers it “crucial” that the Catholic Church “take measures to ensure that these discriminatory practices are not repeated and to promote a message of inclusion and respect towards all people, regardless of their sexual orientation.”

IUC urges Canarian society to “reject any form of discrimination and work together to build a more inclusive and respectful community”
