The ULL, against the implementation of a new private university in the Canary Islands

The Governing Council of the University of La Laguna (ULL) has expressed this Monday its rejection to the launch of a new private university in the Canary Islandsregarding the favorable report recently issued by the Canary Islands University Council.

The rector of the ULL, Francisco García, has informed the Governing Council of said report in favor of the implementation of a new private center, the fifth in the Canary Islands. García recalled that the universities of La Laguna and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria raised a legality objection in last week’s session of the Canary Islands University Council so that the debate on the possible approval of said center was removed from the agenda.

The reason was non-compliance with the state-level requirements that this center should have, which was ultimately not accepted.

Francisco García believes that “the capacity for action” of the two public universities is being diluted due to the entry into the regional system of “numerous private centers”, which is why he advocates the reform of the Law of Coordination of the Canary Islands University System to “adequately weight” the weight of public universities, the ULL reports in a note.

García has also reported that this new private center that plans to be implemented in the Canary Islands has sent him a statement in which he urges him to withdraw and not publish his public position on this matter.
