Today, Tuesday, the Cabildo of Tenerife commemorated World Volunteer Day with the reading of a manifesto, organized through the Tenerife Isla Solidaria program, in collaboration with the Federation of the Platform of Volunteer Entities of the Canary Islands.
Representatives of the Hospital Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus-Acamán, Red Cross, Manos Unidas, Quiero Ser Como Tú Ayúdame and the Platform Federation of Volunteer Entities of the Canary Islands, as well as students from the Hispano Inglés school, participated in the reading. Numerous volunteer entities from Tenerife were also present, as well as students from IES Magallanes, the Anaga educational center and the La Salle school.
The Minister of Social Action, Águeda Fumero, assured that in this way they want “the voice of the volunteers to be heard”, whom today, from the Cabildo, wanted to thank “for their social commitment, which contributes to having a better, more supportive, more participatory and more inclusive”.
The reading of the manifesto was also attended by students from different educational centers in which the Cabildo, through the Tenerife Isla Solidaria program, develops the ‘Cuento Contigo’ project, which promotes volunteering among schoolchildren, with the aim that “Solidarity is a value present in the youngest, with the desire that it remain throughout their lives.”
International Volunteer Day has been celebrated every December 5 since 1985, by mandate of the General Assembly of the United Nations. This day advocates and recognizes the work of volunteers and organizations, and promotes the work of the Third Sector in communities, institutions and the private sector.
The manifesto claimed “the role of volunteering as a transforming force in society”, as well as the importance of “building, among all, the culture of solidarity as a lifestyle, since volunteering enriches those who receive it, but also to those who offer it”.
Águeda Fumero recalled that the Tenerife Isla Solidaria program has been promoting volunteering for 26 years. Currently, the program has more than 3,000 volunteers registered in the volunteer pool, and due to the fire emergency that affected Tenerife since last August 15, 6,378 people were registered to collaborate in the support work. and help in the forest fire, as well as more than 630 volunteer entities from different areas of action, whose work benefits thousands of people who are in a situation of social vulnerability.
