On the west coast of the island of Tenerife, there is an impressive coastline in which the presence of the imposing Los Gigantes Cliffs dominates a terrestrial marine landscape of indescribable beauty. Located in the municipality of Santiago del Teide, in which the Teno Rasca Marine Strip ZEC extends along its coast, declared the First Whale Sanctuary in Europe in 2021, a distinction awarded by the World Cetacean Alliance.
This international recognition reinforces the positioning of Santiago del Teide as a destination committed to the development of differentiated tourism products, which promote ecotourism, sustainability, respect, and responsible observation of cetaceans, hand in hand with the companies that develop these activities. adhered to the Sustainability Charter and that operate in the municipality, in the Los Gigantes Marina.
Whale watching joins the set of tourist attractions that this municipality in the southwest of Tenerife has, which is home to a colony of more than 500 pilot whales that move in an area of 22 kilometers between the Rasca Lighthouse and Punta de Teno. And throughout the year, 26 of the more than 79 species of cetaceans that inhabit the entire planet pass through the Canary Islands, such as dolphins, orcas or blue whales.
In addition, added to all this is the possibility of enjoying this activity at any time of the year, thanks to the good climate of this area, one of the best internationally, characterized by a constant spring temperature 365 days a year. .
Santiago del Teide participates in the Project “Network of municipalities for the implementation of the transnational ecotourism strategy through the creation of thematic ecotourism products” ECO-TUR2 MAC2/4.6c/394, and which aims to implement the strategy transnational ecotourism through the optimization and structuring of the ecotourism offer and the improvement of conservation and awareness actions of the natural and cultural heritage of the cooperation space. This project has allowed the municipality to create several thematic ecotourism products, among which is “Ecotur Azul” in which all the activities that can be carried out in its privileged marine environment are concentrated, such as whale watching.
