During the first half of 2024, the La Laguna City Council will undertake the drafting of the project for the redevelopment of Heraclio Sánchez Street, in the center of La Laguna and pedestrianized since mid-2020 through tactical urban planning.
This was confirmed by the Councilor for Works and Infrastructure, Adolfo Cordobés, in a question from the PP about this project during the last plenary session, and in which the councilor responded that it was planned to “start contracting the drafting of the proposal in the first semester.” of 2024”.
“Since its pedestrianization, Heraclio Sánchez Street has become a space very frequented by citizens, with an important commercial reactivation and as a recreation area, which connects the university area directly with the city center and the Plaza del Cristo de “a very comfortable way,” he highlighted. “With this first measure, it was already demonstrated that tactical urbanism was a sustainable and very successful solution for a street that until then was dominated by the presence of the car. Now we want to continue advancing in this project, with a comprehensive action that improves the accessibility of the street, incorporates urban furniture elements in accordance with the environment and offers a better image of our status as a World Heritage city, within our commitment to give back urban spaces to people,” said the councilor.
According to information from the area, a new design will be made for the redevelopment of the street, that is, it is not a simple improvement, but rather a complete design of the route of the road with the materials decided on in the project. Although it is expected that it will be similar to the other pedestrian streets in the town, with a single platform, with no difference between street and sidewalks, which will be finalized during the design process.
The pedestrianization of Heraclio Sánchez, through tactical urbanism, meant giving new life to this street, which had been left in the shadow of the town’s success and had become the downtown parking area, making it attractive to neighbors and businessmen. . A tactical urban planning that began in May 2020 with the installation of barriers to delimit the terraces, pedestrian routes and traffic, restricted to access to private parking lots, and that went through different phases until the beautification of the road through the painted asphalt.
