SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Nov. 25 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Cabildo of La Palma, through the Comprehensive Care and Intervention Service for Women and Minor Victims of Gender Violence, has assisted a total of 165 women and 49 minors so far this year, according to the insular head of this Area, Ángeles Fernández.
The Minister of Equality shows her concern about this social problem and considers that there is still a long way to go to achieve effective and real equality between men and women. “This 2023 in La Palma, 184 complaints of sexist violence have been registered between January and June, figures that, without knowing the annual balance, already show an increase compared to previous years,” said Ángeles Fernández.
Within the framework of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and with the aim of raising awareness and sensitizing the population of the Island regarding this serious social problem, the Cabildo has projected a video mapping in the Plaza de España in Santa Cruz de La Palma in which these and other data related to care for victims of gender violence have been shown.
“This is an action that we have developed to capture in a striking way these figures behind which there are people who are or have gone through situations of sexist violence,” explained the counselor.
Other data on gender violence in La Palma
The island of La Palma has also registered an increase in calls received through the 112 Victims of Violence Assistance Service and, on the other hand, the Emergency Device for Attacked Women (DEMA) serves an average of 4 or 5 weekly activations, although there have been 3 daily activations, with April being the month with the highest registrations, with 28 activations.
This Saturday, November 25, a collaborative activity framed in the actions promoted by the Cabildo within the framework of the Strategic Plan for equality and prevention of gender violence of La Palma has also been carried out in the Plaza de España in the capital of Palma.
Specifically, the artist from La Palma, Ángela Glezal, has captured a series of ideas in a mural located in this space and related to gender violence and equality in which all the people passing by have been invited to participate to demand the importance of an egalitarian society.
In this sense, on December 4, a new activity will also be developed in this sense, through the Women’s Talent initiative, which seeks to make visible the role of women in the sports field, specifically in football. That day, more than a hundred girls will go out to the El Paso countryside with a t-shirt on which they can read the phrase GENDER VIOLENCE IS NOT A GAME.
