He Candelaria City Council definitively awarded the waste collection and street and coastal cleaning of the municipality to the company Valoriza Servicios Medioambientales SA for an amount of 20,158,217.06 euros and 1,4,11,075.19 euros of IGIC and a completion period of 7 years , after the rejection of the allegations presented by the works council (UGT) of the company that currently provides the service, Urbaser, and the presentation of the documentation of the new successful company.

The non-admission of the union allegations, after the devastating report of the municipal secretary, was ratified on Thursday night by the Contracting Tribunal of the Government of the Canary Islands, which understood that the allegations presented in the file approved on November 6 did not fit, and that They were basically limited to a night shift in the new contract, which is clear is “exceptional.”

The approval in the extraordinary plenary session held this morning had 13 votes in favor, PSOE (11), CC (1) and Vox (1), and 7 abstentions, PP (6) and Unidas Sí Podemos (1). The abstentions, As PP and USP spokespersons explained, they were due to the doubts raised by the workers, and also, according to Lourdes Móndejar (USP), to the lack of “social and environmental clauses.”

“I am proud of the work that has been done with this file. It is an important and historic day for our municipality. Today we feel happy because we have awarded the public service that Candelaria so needs and deserves. A joint and global task of the municipal technicians, whom I thank for their work, which has had the impetus and support of the municipal government group,” said the mayor, Mari Brito, in her speech, who hopes to sign the contract as soon as possible to make this long-awaited service a reality.

Along these same lines, the councilor responsible for the Treasury and Concessionaire Companies, Airam Pérez Chinea, spoke out, describing the contract as a capital piece for the municipality. “We have worked hard and have not given up the effort to move this contract forward, despite the difficulties that have arisen,” said Pérez, who reiterated that we all owe ourselves to the general interest and responsibility as public servants, in a reproach. to the PP and USP for putting themselves “in profile” in a matter so important for the municipality with their abstention, warning that “I will remind them day by day of their sense of voting, abstaining from a contract of this magnitude,” said Pérez Chinea, who used the literary resource to explain the historic and long procedure that theoretically ended yesterday with the awarding of the service – the allegations could be followed by appeals -, which is initially scheduled to begin operating from 2024: “Perseverance is everyone’s secret triumphs”, by the French writer Victor Hugo and another by former South African president Nelson Mandela: “After climbing a big hill, one finds only that there are many more hills to climb.”

Now 71.40 euros per year are paid per home

Candelaria, with almost 30,000 inhabitants, has about 14,100 registered homes, each of which pays 71.40 euros annually for garbage service. Therefore, around one million euros are collected, not counting companies, an amount that will increase in the future, with the increase in the rate, although it is not certain that it will be next year. The cost of waste collection, street and coastal cleaning, to which the cleaning of public buildings must be added, exceeds three million euros from municipal coffers.
