SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Nov. 21. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The president of the Cabildo of La Palma, Sergio Rodríguez, has conveyed his regret for the death of the former president of the Canary Islands Jerónimo Saavedra, whom he considers “an example for future generations” for his commitment to the freedom and social equality of the Canary Islands.
In that sense, Sergio Rodríguez indicated that “it is not easy to say goodbye to someone you admire, someone close to you, and who will continue to be an example for future generations of the Canary Islands.”
Jerónimo Saavedra “was a fighter for freedom in the period of dictatorship and democratic transition in Spain,” recalled Rodríguez, for whom “his work contributed to laying the foundations of a rule of law in which this country has grown socially.”
Furthermore, in history his name will always be linked to autonomy, being the first president of the Canary Islands and opening the path that illustrious statesmen of the archipelago have followed.
Sergio Rodríguez also pointed out that “we cannot ignore his defense of the rights of groups that have suffered social repression, championing the recognition and fight for equality between men, women and gays.”
Furthermore, protected by a lifestyle in which the concepts of “freedom and equality” were always present, he also led the solidarity ideals of the Masonic fraternities.
But we cannot forget that Jerónimo Saavedra was also another palmero, recognized as an Adopted Son, and that is how he will be remembered forever. Thus, Sergio Rodríguez highlights that “from his beloved Mazo, sitting on the terrace of his house, he enjoyed the sunrises of the Island, always accompanied by faithful and good friends, with an intelligent conversation, and that always served as a lesson to those who had the unique opportunity to learn from him.
For all these reasons, the Palmera Institution sends its most sincere expression of recognition and condolences to the family and people close to Jerónimo Saavedra for his death.
