The Neotropic Foundationthe only center for the protection and conservation of exotic species in the Canary Islands, received a call from the Emergency Coordination Center of the Government of the Canary Islands (CECOES), warning of the presence of a large specimen of snail in said park.
The Neotropic Foundation has confirmed that it is a specimen of the Giant African Snail (Lissachatina sp), an invasive exotic species according to Royal Decree 630/2013, of August 2, which regulates the Spanish Catalog of invasive exotic species. Once the identification of this specimen was confirmed, the Canary Islands Government technician responsible for REDEXOS was contacted and Civil Protection personnel traveled to the aforementioned park to capture the mollusk and place it in the custody of the Foundation.
The veterinary service of the Neotropic Foundation has already carried out coprological, mucus and cytology analyses, both by direct observation and by flotation, with negative results for the presence of parasitic or infectious microorganisms, so, at least, in this specimen, Any type of risk to public health is ruled out.
