SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Nov. 5 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The National Police have arrested in Los Cristianos (Tenerife) the four owners of the canoe that arrived on October 27 to the island with the lifeless body of a minor inside.
According to the Canary Islands Police Headquarters, specifically, they are accused of being alleged perpetrators of the crimes of reckless homicide and favoring clandestine immigration.
It was around 5:00 a.m. on October 27 when the vessel was intercepted by the Maritime Rescue service after being located eight miles away from the Port of Los Cristianos.
The people traveling on the boat, 226 sub-Saharan migrants, were transferred to land and 14 of them, due to their health, were taken to the hospital to receive health care, four of them urgently by helicopter. In addition, the lifeless body of a minor was found inside the canoe.
For its part, the National Police began an investigation and identified the four skippers of the canoe, which sailed for eleven days with the migrants without food or water, which could have contributed to the death of the minor and the poor state of health of the migrants. 14 people transferred to hospital.
SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVE ALSO DIED ON THE JOURNEY
Likewise, according to the migrants’ testimonies, several people died during the crossing and their bodies were thrown over the side of the boat into the ocean.
For this reason, the police arrested the four bosses and, after hearing their statements at police stations, they were placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authority.
The judicial authority determined the entry into preventive detention of three of the detainees and the release of the fourth, adopting certain precautionary measures.
