It was a crime that marked the Transition in the Canary Islands. On December 12, 1977, the young university student Javier Fernández Quesada died after being shot by the Civil Guard on the entrance steps of the University of La Laguna. 47 years later, the documentary film Quesada: the truth of silence‘ addresses this tragic event with rigor and depth after almost 15 years of investigation carried out by the Tenerife journalist and filmmaker Iván López.
A preview of the work can be seen this Thursday, November 2, at 7:00 p.m., in the Chamber Room of the Leal Theater in an activity organized by the Department of Culture and the Autonomous Organization for Musical Activities.
The cineforum is a first look at what the premiere scheduled for this month of December will entail, and an opportunity to raise questions or share reflections in a discussion after the screening with the presence of the director himself, Iván López, and the producer, Lamberto Guerra. The activity will last approximately one hour, depending on the active participation of the public, and admission will be free until capacity is reached.
“Through this collaboration, the La Laguna City Council becomes one of the main collaborators of this documentary, which addresses one of the darkest episodes in the contemporary history of our municipality, but which is also a document of enormous value regarding an event that is a historical and democratic memory of the Canary Islands and of Spain,” says the Councilor for Culture, Dailos González, who invites people not to miss “the opportunity to learn first-hand about this great research work.”
The name of Quesada became over the years an authentic symbol of the period of Spanish transition in the Canary Islands, and more specifically in La Laguna, but the truth about this event and the figure of the murdered young student has not been revealed. addressed until now with the rigor and depth they deserve. With this work Iván López tries to remedy a silence of almost half a century.
