Since this Monday, the municipality of La Laguna has a square dedicated to the president of the Romi Kamela Nakerar Association of Gypsy Women, Josefa Santiago Fernández, as a tribute to her career in defense of equal rights and opportunities for women and girls of that community.
The square has been inaugurated by the mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, who has also dedicated this public space “to all the brave gypsy women”, while the honoree, Josefa Santiago, has referred to the people who have supported her in their work and daily work.
In a statement, the Lagunero City Council has indicated that the Romi Kamela Nakerar Roma Women’s Association was founded in August 1994 in the La Candelaria neighborhood, in La Cuesta.
Since then, its projects and activities have been focused on improving the quality of life of the Roma community and their families in the Canary Islands, seeking to create support networks with different sectors of the La Laguna population. EFE
