SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Oct. 30 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Canarian cheeses have achieved a total of 38 medals at the World Cheese Awards 2023, the most important international competition in this sector. In this 35th edition of the contest, the Archipelago has obtained three super golds, two golds, 13 silvers and 20 bronzes. At the event, held in Trondheim (Norway), 4,502 cheeses from 43 countries competed.
The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands, Narvay Quintero, has highlighted that “the Canarian triumph in this prestigious competition is a new example of the quality of the productions of the Islands, internationally awarded, and represents a recognition of the work of our cheesemakers”.
Super gold was awarded to the cured sheep from Guía, from Quesería La Caldera (Gran Canaria), the cured pasteurized goat’s milk from Quesos Luisita (Gran Canaria), and the Maxorata cured with paprika from Grupo Ganaderos de Fuerteventura (Denomination of Origin Protected Majorero Cheese).
On the other hand, the pure semi-cured goat’s milk cheese from Quesería El Guanche (Tenerife) and the Finca de Uga spread with paprika (Lanzarote) were recognized with a gold medal.
The silver medals went to the pure cured smoked goat from the El Guanche Cheese Factory (Tenerife); the semi-cured with goat paprika, the natural cured goat and the tender natural goat from Quesería El Faro (Lanzarote); goat curing from Quesos El Caidero (Gran Canaria); the curing of a mixture of goat and sheep from the Cortijo El Montañón Cheese Factory (Gran Canaria); the smoked Granja Las Cuevas by Félix Alberto Gil Rodríguez (La Palma); the cured pasteurized milk from a blend of El Zurrón Cheeses (Gran Canaria), and the aged one with goat and sheep gofio from Quesería Montesdeoca (Tenerife).
Added to these awards are those from the Fuerteventura Livestock Group for its gourmet semi-cured Maxorata with DOP Queso Majorero, the tender smoked Tofio, the semi-cured Tofio with gofio, and the cured Tofio with paprika.
Finally, the bronzes went to the old Guatisea and the semi-cured Guatisea from Quesería Montaña Blanca (Lanzarote); the semi-cured goat cheese from Quesos La Era del Cardón (Gran Canaria); the tender smoked goat and the cured one with goat paprika from Quesería El Faro (Lanzarote); the curing of pasteurized goat milk from Quesos Volcania (Gran Canaria); and the Bodega de sheep, Rojillo, Don Nicolás and Vulcano, all from Finca De Uga (Lanzarote).
The tender smoked Herreño Cheese and the natural curing from the Sociedad Cooperativas Ganaderos de El Hierro received this same distinction; Los Altos de Moya el Media Flor de Guía (Gran Canaria); the semi-cured pasteurized milk mixture of Lomo Gallego Fresh Cheeses (Gran Canaria); in addition to the Selectum cured with paprika, Alisios, Maxorata semi-cured with paprika with PDO Queso Majorero, and the Maxorata semi-cured from the Grupo Ganaderos de Fuerteventura.
Also awarded were the pure cured goat cheese from Quesería El Guanche (Tenerife), and the semi-cured cheese with paprika made from pasteurized goat milk from Quesos San Mateo (Gran Canaria).
