The chaotic situation that Correos is experiencing in the south of Tenerife -and in the whole of the Canary Islands-, graphically documented by this newspaper in recent daysyesterday reached national political dimensions thanks to the initiative of the deputy of Canarian Coalition (CC) in the Congress of Deputies, Cristina Valido.

In a question presented to the Congress Board, Valido asks the Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Raquel Sánchez, to respond in writing about whether “Post Office intends to provide the necessary means to solve the situation in the most short possible time”, in addition to reminding him that “offices in the south of the island of Tenerife are on the verge of collapse due to lack of staff” and hiring in the last four years.

Valid: “The workload is unaffordable”

The nationalist deputy explains that “the workload suffered by workers is unaffordable and the distribution objectives are totally unattainable, which causes around 15,000 official notifications to be paralyzed, with the enormous damage that this entails for citizens.”

In statements to DIARIO DE AVISOS, Cristina Valido assured that, since there are no commissions or plenary sessions in Congress and “since it is a serious problem, I did not want to wait. There is no staff – she added – and the ones there are are burned out. That is why we have decided to present the question and, once they answer us, see what decisions we make.”

In recent weeks, up to 15,000 official notifications have accumulated in the distribution units of this public entity in the municipalities of Arona, Granadilla de Abona and Adeje (whose distribution units are Cho-Parque La Reina, San Isidro and Playa de the Americas), which can generate significant problems for individuals and companies. In the case of packages, these are also counted in thousands.

Only in the delivery units of these three municipalities, the most populated in the Region, there are 1,600 registered and undistributed for weeks, despite the fact that their delivery times range between 24 and 72 hours. It is not known how many are not discharged.

Workers protest in Arona

To them we must add another 5,000 headed to Arona and that the Post Office management has ordered not to remove from the Taco logistics center, according to the complaint of Comisiones Obreras, the majority union of this entity, both in the Canary Islands and at the national level. And another 1,300 in the USE, part of which affect Candelaria and Güímar. Precisely, the Post Office workers were called to protest yesterday at the doors of the delivery unit corresponding to the most populated municipality in the South, Arona, which is in Cho-Parque La Reina. The mobilization was called by the CCOO itself and by the UGT.

Dozens of workers supported the call made by both unions, standing in front of their workplace for twenty minutes, starting at 9:00 a.m.
The unions consider that the lack of staff is generalized in the Post Office units throughout the Canary Islands, although the focus in recent weeks has been on the South due to the number of letters, notifications and undelivered parcels throughout the Canary Islands. the Shire.

The workers’ representatives defend that there is a lack of personnel, with an average need that, in Arona, is between six and eight people per month.
