Cultural agenda of La Laguna: all the weekend plans, in detail

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20

Witches of Oz, by Habemus Teatro

DATE: October 20

PLACE: Leal Theater

TIME: 8:30 p.m.

Habemus Teatro presents a musical for family audiences as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz. Aimed at audiences over 6 years old, it is presented as a demonstration of the struggle to overcome one of the three witch sisters: the good witch of the north and her two sisters from the east and the west. It tells the story of Elphaba, who since she was little has been discriminated against by the rest due to the green color of her skin. The work, which also reflects Dorothy’s arrival in Kansas, has among its plot lines racism, female empowerment and the defense of animals and it recounts some events that are not told in The Wizard of Oz.

Pedro, a rebellion of silences

DATE: October 20

PLACE: Unión Tejina Theater

TIME: 8:30 p.m.

Multimedia project that reveals the life and work of the Gomero poet and journalist Pedro García Cabrera, as well as his political and social role. The show combines theater with music and unpublished texts by the author himself and is developed by the Pedro García Cabrera Cultural Chair of the University of La Laguna, under the coordination of the chair’s director, Guadalberto Hernández.

Witches of Oz, by Habemus Teatro

Habemus Teatro presents a musical for family audiences as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz. XIV Solidarity Festival

The new edition of this festival brings the Leal Theater Yo Quiero Un Mundo Contigo back together, to benefit the La Laguna nursing home. Like every year, the Tenerife public will be able to enjoy a variety show for all ages. Full of rhythm, harmony, humor and magic, they will make the evening an entertaining tribute to the little ones in the house.

Presentation of the book Conversations with Carlos Galilea by Caetano Veloso

DATE: October 23

PLACE: Leal Theater

TIME: 6:00 p.m.

Within the framework of the Tensamba Festival, this book is presented that collects 19 conversations that Caetano Veloso had for almost thirty years with Carlos Galilea in Rio de Janeiro, Salvador de Bahía, Paris, London, Madrid or Barcelona. In them, they talked and reflected openly about song, cinema, politics, journalism, sex, old age…

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 24

The Okavango Delta, by Abubukaka

DATE: October 24

PLACE: Leal Theater

TIME: 8:30 p.m.

The Abubukaka company brings its show The Okavango Delta to La Laguna. With this show, the Canarian comedians will seek to make the audience laugh by “attacking” our historical, cultural or linguistic values. Maintaining their classic sketch format, they will present their blunders on stage.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25

Gene Cedres

DATE: October 25

PLACE: Leal Theater

TIME: 8:00 p.m.

Gen Cedrés presents his first album in the Chamber Hall of the Teatro Leal, titled It’s not free, it’s not for sale either. The band that combines the rhythms of reggae, cumbia, rock, funk and even flamenco will try to play with the senses of the audience.

FROM OCTOBER 20

Memento mori. The meaning of death in the Canary Islands

DATE: from October 20 to November 25

PLACE: Old Convent of Santo Domingo.

HOURS: Monday to Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (Opening, Friday the 20th at 8:00 p.m.).

Exhibition curated by Benito Cabrear that tries to cover, in a didactic way, the different ways in which the Canarians have faced death throughout history. The artists compile points of view and traditions as diverse as music, popular lyrics, religion or gastronomy.

Kronikas Project: The Lagoon

DATE: until October 26

LOCATION: House of the Captains

Exhibition of comics from the Kronikas: La Laguna project, an exhibition closely related to a magazine in which 15 Canarian and three international authors have participated, and which pays tribute to the historical and architectural heritage of the municipality and the function it plays as a source of inspiration for the creation of comics. Organized by the Cine+Cómic Foundation in collaboration with the La Laguna City Council, the Moebius Cultural Chair of the ULL, the Maison Autrique (Belgium), the Vitrina de Valonia (Cuba) and the magazine Kronikas.

UNTIL THE 9 OF NOVEMBER

Monument. Nine Guanche incarnations

DATE: until November 9

PLACE: Hermitage of San Miguel

The Canarian artist Yapci Ramos (La Laguna, 1977) questions the forms of representation of the Guanche past from a contemporary prism. The exhibition is born from the concern and unease caused by the low presence in the public space of monuments that represent Guanche women and other subaltern identities, as well as the precolonial origin and the essence of the territory.
