The Canary Islands president asks the Government to activate the community Civil Protection Mechanism to have more resources

VALVERDE (EL HIERRO), Oct. 19 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, highlighted this Thursday the “empathy” of the Minister of Migration, Inclusion and Social Security, José Luis Escrivá, when visiting the island of El Hierro and trying to improve the reception of migrants given that The Canary Islands cannot be left “alone” in the face of the incessant arrival of boats.

In statements to journalists after a meeting with the minister, the president of the Cabildo, Alpidio Armas, and the three mayors of the island, he said that this visit “is a gesture” that was demanded from the Canary Islands, also recognizing that Escrivá “was the “the only one that was preparing for what was going to happen”, providing the reception with means and resources.

Clavijo has appealed not to “denaturalize” the reception of migrants since many people and children come on the boats “who risk their lives at sea and some do not arrive.”

He indicated that this Thursday’s meeting is an example of the “way of working” so that a “dignified reception” can be guaranteed so that day-to-day life on the island is not “disrupted”, and he has once again insisted that “It does not make sense” that within the Canary Islands 574 minors have been referred from El Hierro and among all the communities it will not even reach 400.

“Solidarity has to be demonstrated with actions, the State must provide resources and the communities must provide solidarity,” he noted.

In this sense, he has called on the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, to immediately activate the Community Civil Protection Mechanism to respond with better means to the migratory phenomenon that originates in West Africa.

The activation of the community Civil Protection Mechanism would improve public actions and resources in the face of the growing arrival of migrants to the archipelago, which would make possible rapid responses to emergency situations such as the one the islands are experiencing with the arrivals of cayucos.

This measure, which has already been requested by letter to the acting President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, is aimed at “being able to count on effective help that contributes to alleviating the difficult situation that the Canary Islands are going through in recent months in the field of migratory crisis”, as stated in the letter.

DEMAND A COMMON MIGRATION POLICY

The president has attacked the EU because “they are incapable” of establishing a common immigration policy, which helps “certain fascist, xenophobic and racist discourses” that ultimately “do not fit”, as has been demonstrated in Italy where “they have worsened the situation” despite the arrival of Meloni to the Government.

“This is not the way, the way is dialogue and understanding and putting pressure on the European Union, which cannot look the other way, it has to get involved,” he indicated, while demanding that the pact be approved. asylum and migration before the European elections “because if not we have to start over.”

Along these lines, he has said that migratory movements “will continue to occur” because Africa’s GDP is 10% of Europe’s GDP, so it is necessary to “put in place regulatory channels” that “prevent” mafias from trafficking people.

Clavijo has appealed to “all work together” to achieve a “unanimous and humanitarian response” for which he has once again demanded more “political coordination” and that Escrivá’s “predisposition, empathy and support” be maintained. “You have to be fair when things are done well,” he indicated.

In his opinion, “this is the path, not that of confrontation, tension and political exploitation” – in reference to the visit of the president of Vox, Santiago Abascal, to the island of El Hierro -.
