The town of San Andrés is now opening its remodeled El Dique street, one of the main arteries of this Santracrucero neighborhood, which, at the foot of the castle, houses numerous establishments dedicated to restaurants. A work that has taken almost three months to complete and that yesterday the mayor of the capital, José Manuel Bermúdez, officially visited to present it to the neighbors. The new road, from now on, becomes pedestrian by eliminating road traffic and parking, and has cost the City Council close to one million euros.
Bermúdez stated that “the remodeling of El Dique Street was an outstanding debt with San Andrés and with all the neighbors and merchants who suffered greatly when the storms arrived and devastated everything. A work that until now had not been able to be carried out as the town was not protected with the current breakwater. Therefore, not only has this need been met, but the town has also gained in appearance and spaciousness, by giving more prominence to pedestrians and helping to promote the commercial area, especially restaurants and terraces.”
In this regard, the mayor added that “after this work the street is more attractive, with adequate lighting at the entrance to the town and that over the months it will gain in appearance as the landscaping adapts to the environment.”
The remodeling of El Dique has involved readjusting its purpose until now, intended mainly for traffic and parking, to that of a free public space where the priority becomes pedestrian and leisure use, leaving a lane for restricted traffic of vehicles. neighbors and loading and unloading.
A suppression of parking that, according to the capital’s councilor, “is compensated by the 300 parking spaces that we have just opened at the head of the Las Teresitas beach, which can be accessed on foot by crossing the bridge.”
In this sense, Bermúdez assured that the City Council “is investing a lot in San Andrés and in works as important as the channeling of the Cercado ravine, at the mouth, so that the town does not flood anymore with the rains. In addition, we have finished the sports center and we are about to conclude the works on the second bridge that will connect the residents of the Anaga Massif with the municipality through San Andrés, which is almost 50% completed and is expected to be completed by the end of year or early 2024.”
Likewise, the mayor announced that “other actions in the area will be to pave the entrance street that connects San Andrés with Taganana to the bridge, which is urgently needed due to the current state, in addition to continuing with the castle project, whose execution is in progress. March. There are many things left to do in this town and all of them good,” he highlighted.
Delays
For his part, the Councilor for Works and Infrastructure of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Javier Rivero, explained that “the work on El Dique street should have been completed last August, but it was delivered two and a half months after the date. planned due to the channeling that had to be carried out for the telephone fiber line, which delayed the rest of the project in terms of the execution of the retaining walls towards Marítima Avenue.” Likewise, the councilor stressed that “another fact that has delayed the completion of the work has been being able to finish the drainage work, with better execution for the collection of river water, since it has been completely modified to give future continuity to the rainwater and street sanitation network. An action that will allow the rest of the surrounding roads to also connect to this network in the near future,” he said.
In this regard, Rivero highlighted that “these actions added to the work have increased the final budget for the remodeling of El Dique street to a total of 996,393.80 euros.”
Regarding the businesses located in this maritime area, mostly dedicated to restaurants, the councilor pointed out that “the leisure part will benefit from the road improvement if businessmen also do their part, which is why the City Council will is helping so they can install new, more comfortable and spacious terraces. It must be taken into account that we have gone from a street that had a 1.50 meter sidewalk and a parking area, to a road that is gaining in width, with a 2.50 meter sidewalk on which terraces can be located without the need to use platforms. as until now and that, in addition, implied an extra expense for merchants.”
From now on, cafes and restaurants will be able to double the space allocated to outdoor terraces, going from the 12 meters before to the current 22 meters, which will allow the tables to be doubled and, above all, to place them in a more pleasant and safe environment than It will accompany the visitor to walk through the town,” he stated.
With this action, “not only have the road and sidewalk been adapted, but the landscape adaptation of the environment has also been taken into account with the conditioning of efficient public lighting and the use of street and garden furniture,” concluded the councilor of Works from the capital, Javier Rivero.
