A possible agreement between the PSOE and the Canarian Coalition for the nationalists to join the government group of the La Laguna City Council would significantly bring the positions between both parties closer when the CC deputy in Congress, Cristina Valido, supports the future Sánchez government during the legislature, as DIARIO DE AVISOS has learned.
The acting President of the Government of Spain, the socialist Pedro Sánchez, does not necessarily depend on the affirmative vote of CC in his investiture, which has announced its abstention, since Junts assures that it will not abstain, but will vote yes or no for the candidate. CC’s yes was only essential in the event that Junts abstained.
It should be remembered that the coalition members are in the municipal opposition of the City of Los Adelantados since their defeat in the elections held in 2019, when a pact between the PSOE of Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, Unidas se Podemos and Avante La Laguna came to govern the destinies of a square with evident symbolism for CC, since both its general secretary, Fernando Clavijo, and one of its best-known leaders, the current first vice president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Ana Oramas, were once mayors of this City Council.
In the recent elections last May, the socialists once again repeated their victory in the Laguna polls, but they chose to govern as a minority rather than repeat their agreement from the previous mandate with Unidas se Podemos and add Alberto Rodríguez (Drago Canarias) to it. Such a minority now fuels the intentions of CC, which considers that in this way it could reactivate its electoral strength in La Laguna, currently in evident low hours.
Although it is not the pact preferred by Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, he will accept it for the benefit of the stability of the country
Sources close to Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez admitted yesterday to this newspaper, when asked about the news captured in Madrid, that this negotiation is taking place in the capital of Spain, at the same time that they recognized that it is not the pact that neither Gutiérrez nor the PSOE advocated for La Laguna, but in any case it will be accepted by the highest socialist representative of La Laguna, both for party discipline and because we are facing one of the necessary chips at this time to provide political stability to the entire country.
As already indicated, a priori, Valido’s vote would not be decisive for Sánchez’s investiture if, as the Junts deputies announced a few days ago, they do not abstain from the vote, since the votes of these Catalan separatists would be decisive. both in a positive and negative sense. However, no one is unaware of the socialists’ interest in having all possible support not only for the investiture itself but for the rest of the legislature, seasoned all of this with the prize of putting a wedge in the traditional good relationship. between the Popular Party and CC since Clavijo is general secretary of the latter party.
Be that as it may, the negotiations continue behind the scenes, and two key leaders in Pedro Sánchez’s organization chart appear on behalf of the PSOE, such as the Minister of the Presidency, Felix Bolaños, and the Minister of the Treasury, Maria Jesus Montero, who is also the deputy secretary general of the state socialists. Montero was present at the meeting between Sánchez and Valido on the occasion of the round with the different parliamentary forces.
As for CC, its secretary general, Fernando Clavijo, and its already mentioned deputy in Congress, Cristina Valido, are dealing with the matter, whose political figure is gaining strength within the nationalist formation by showing a profile more inclined to negotiation with the different blocks than her predecessor Ana Oramas.
“Those who believe that I have come here to make one man or another president are wrong,” Valido proclaimed in his debut from the speakers’ gallery of the Lower House during the debate on the ultimately failed investiture of Núñez Feijóo.
Beyond the lagoon pact, which would be the main proposal on the agenda for the benefit of CC, the negotiation is also, logically, about the so-called Canarian agenda, although no one hides the fact that this list of agreements will hardly be accepted in its entirety. claims and of which Clavijo’s partner in the Islands, Manuel Domínguez (PP), especially demands investments in hydraulic works.
An agreement with the precedent of the 2011 pact with Abreu that continued without him
In the event that the Canarian Coalition manages to agree with the PSOE on its inclusion in the government team of the La Laguna City Council, it would not be the first time that both parties jointly govern the designs of the municipality of the City of Los Adelantados. In 2011, the then candidate of the Canary Coalition (CC) for the Lagunera Mayor was Fernando Clavijo, today president of this Autonomous Community.
His reference as a partner in the municipal government at that time, representing the socialists, was the former general secretary of the Lagunero PSOE, Javier Abreu, and both signed, on June 23 of that year, a governability pact of said City Council for the next quadrennium.
In a press conference, both Clavijo and Abreu emphasized that the pact signed between both political forces had “the clear objective of guaranteeing the institutional stability of the municipality,” as well as “guaranteeing the provision of public services, employment, water, social services, the approval of the PGO and those matters that affect the quality of life of citizens.”
The aforementioned Government agreement was continued, now without Abreu, in 2015, and cost the PSOE a split from the municipal group. The socialists won the 2019 elections by committing to their voters to evict the Canarian Coalition from Laguna power.
