The director of classics of the fantasy genre such as ‘Howls’ and ‘Gremlins’ Joe Dante will visit Tenerife in November to collect the Honor Award from the Canary Islands Ciudad de La Laguna Isla Calavera Fantastic Film Festival in recognition of his career. The filmmaker will also coincide with the special effects and makeup specialist Colin Arthur, who returns to Calavera Island to serve as president of the jury of the Official Competition Short Film Section.
With an extensive filmography that includes titles such as ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, ‘The Shining’, ‘Alien, the Eighth Passenger’, ‘Conan the Barbarian’ or ‘The Neverending Story’, Colin Arthur will offer at Multicines Tenerife a free-entry masterclass on Wednesday, October 8, as a pre-festival event.
Within this year’s program of the Canary Islands Fantastic Film Festival, the afternoon of Friday, November 17 will be dedicated to Joe Dante and you will be able to see ‘Exploradores’ (1985), a gem of adventure and science fiction cinema suitable for all ages. public; the cult film ‘Piranha’ and ‘Howls’, one of the great references of horror cinema of the eighties, after whose viewing there will be a meeting with the filmmaker.
Born in Morristown, New Jersey, in November 1946, Joe Dante began his film career with producer Roger Corman. His first feature film, ‘Piranha’, was released in 1978; and then came ‘Howls’ (1981), a segment of ‘At the Edge of Reality’ (1983) and ‘Gremlins’ (1984), the latter produced by Steven Spielberg. After the enormous success of the film, Dante returned to work with Spielberg in ‘The Wonder Chip’ (1987) and ‘Gremlins 2: The Next Generation’ (1990). His last work as a director was ‘Mirari’, one of the episodes of the anthology film ‘Nightmare Cinema’, produced by Mick Garris, which could be seen in 2018 at the Calavera Island Festival.
Colin Arthur collected the Honor Award at the Calavera Island Festival in its first edition, in 2017, along with actor Jack Taylor, and together they returned last year to star in an emotional reunion. Likewise, Arthur participated in 2018 in a special edition that took place in La Palma, a tribute to ‘The Neverending Story’, whose fantastic animatronic creatures the artist created.
