The oldest company Delirium Teatro will premiere, next December, the adaptation of one of the novels Canary Islands most important of recent times: Panza de burro, by the young writer Andrea Abreu (Tenerife, nineteen ninety five). The premiere, which will surely generate a lot of expectation, already has dates: December 1 and 2. As is Delirium’s custom, the play will be staged for the first time at the Capitol Theater, in the municipality of Tacoronte (Tenerife) where the company has its headquarters and where rehearsals have already begun to make it a reality.
Published in 2020, the debut work of the Tenerife journalist became, almost immediately, a publishing phenomenon. Panza de burro has sold more than 60,000 copies and has been translated into more than ten languages. In addition, it was selected as the best Spanish debut in 2021 by the Chambéry First Novel Festival and is the winner of the XVI Dulce Chacón Prize.
Those in charge of the adaptation are Severiano García and Soraya González. The first, director and playwright, is the founder of the company and artistic director since 1985. González, also an actress, combines her role as performer with that of management and production at Delirium since 1991.
With rehearsals already underway, the cast of this promising production will include actresses Silvia Criado, Delia SantanaDelia Hernández, Soraya González herself and the actor Javier Socorro.
Julio Tejera assumes the responsibilities of musical director and composer. Héctor León has been in charge of the costume design and Carlos Ramos does the same with the lighting design. Meanwhile, Resources P. will be in charge of audiovisual production. This technical team is joined by John P. Cruz, responsible for image design, and Carlos Ramos who, together with Grace Morales, will also be in charge of lighting and sound during the performances.
Delirium thus faces the challenge of adapting the story of the two protagonists of this Canarian novel that has managed to travel around the world: two ten-year-old girls, Isora and her best friend.
Delirium Teatro celebrates its 38 years of history this year. There are almost four decades of experience with the objective always set on “producing theater from the Canary Islands for the world.” Among other activities related to the stage, they have performed 27 shows in which different theatrical content and styles have been discussed, such as drama, comedy, contemporary, gestural or street theater. “We always go out of our way to ensure the quality and rigor of the proposals,” they say. Among these productions are, to give some examples, Un Culo anda libre, Quijote, la Konkista de Canarias, La tip del iceberg, Bernarda Alba or Proyecto Fausto. They have received numerous awards and distinctions both nationally and internationally.
