Adeje eliminates the presence of animals in its pilgrimage

The City Council of Adeje will eliminate the presence of animals from its pilgrimage starting this year, which due to the heat will turn this Sunday into a pilgrimage walk.

The walk will begin at 1:00 p.m. this Sunday in the Plaza de la Cruz del Llano and will conclude in the Church of Santa Úrsula with the traditional offering to the Virgin of the Incarnation.

In a statement, the mayor of Adeje, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, explains that the current heat wave has made it advisable to make the decision to dispense with animals in the pilgrimage, although “we had been evaluating it for some time.”

He elaborates that this measure, which could be temporary this Sunday due to the high temperatures, has chosen to make it permanent “to safeguard animal well-being.”

The Adeje City Council states that the festival schedule is subject to weather changes and may undergo changes, although in principle a drop in temperatures is expected for Sunday.

The local corporation remembers that the Adeje pilgrimage has gone through different stages over the decades, first with animals, then using motor vehicles, to recover the draft animals over the years.
