He Santa Úrsula City Council has decided to suspend the patron saint festivities in honor of Saint Ursula and Our Lady of the Rosary after the latest reactivations of the forest fire, which have affected the upper area of the municipality and led to the evacuation of more than 3,000 residents last week.
Mayor, Juan Manuel Acosta, explained that the decision was made yesterday, unanimously, after the meeting with the members of the municipal corporation present and municipal groups involved in the festivities. “The situation that we have experienced in recent days and the reactivation of the alert due to high temperatures and risk of forest fire is incompatible with the celebration of the holidays.“he added.
In this sense, the government group reiterates the commitment of the Santa Úrsula City Council to allocate all the necessary efforts and resources to the extinction work, collaborating with the security and emergency forces.
For his part, the Festival councilor, José Feliciano López, indicated that, in addition to supporting this decision for safety and prevention reasons, the corporation has decided to cancel the festivities for reasons of solidarity with the neighbors who have suffered the consequences of the fire. “The solidarity, cooperation and resilience that our people show are, right now, above celebration,” he added.
At the beginning of August, Santa Úrsula was affected by a forest fire that caused the evacuation of around 4,000 people. This emergency was repeated again, after a reactivation, in the first week of October, affecting 3,000 people who were evicted from their homes as a precaution.
This situation has been aggravated by the damage to a home and a tool room, added to the declaration of the Emergency Department of the Government of the Canary Islands maximum alert due to risk of forest fire declared yesterday, October 9.
