Two beaches in El Médano closed to bathing due to fecal contamination


The City Council of Granadilla de Abona, in the south of Tenerife, has decreed this Wednesday the temporary closure of Playa El Médano (central beach) and Playa Leocadio Machado after detecting in the analyzes that an indicator of fecal bacteria enterococci exceeds the maximum level permitted.

In addition, the red flag has been raised, temporarily prohibiting bathing, as detailed by the local corporation, which explains that the levels allowed for bathing have only been exceeded on those two beaches.

The Granadilla City Council assures that this measure is taken to guarantee the safety of bathers, pending the results of the latest analysis, and as soon as they confirm that the waters are suitable for bathing, it will be reopened.

Until then, it is recommended to follow the restrictions of the beach rescue and safety team.

Closure also in the north

This Tuesday it was the City Council of Puerto de la Cruz, in the north, that also announced the temporary closure of swimming on Grande Beach in Playa Jardín because alterations in biological parameters had been observed.

The municipal council indicated that in one of the ordinary sample collections that are carried out punctually on all the beaches of the municipality and that are analyzed in the General Directorate of Public Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, these alterations were observed, so they advise that, Provisionally and as a precautionary measure, swimming is not allowed on the aforementioned beaches.
