The Executive Commission of the Commonwealth of Northeast Tenerife yesterday awarded the street cleaning and waste collection service in Tacoronte, El Sauzal, Santa Úrsula, La Matanza, La Victoria and El Rosario to the Urbaser-Martínez Cano Temporary Business Union (UTE), for seven years and for 50,681,590 euros.
Its president and mayor of El Rosario, Escolásico Gil, explained that “we aspire to take a leap of quality in service to almost 90,000 residents (more than 9% of the Island’s population)” made up of the six municipalities, “with better cleaning and waste collection in accordance with the new recycling criteria established by Europe.”
Among the improvements of the contract, its duration (seven years) stands out, the 10% increase in the workforce with respect to the number of workers to be substituted, the installation of more metal containers, including the one for organic matter and the free collection of large commercial cardboard producers.
The six municipalities will jointly face the contract budget based on their population. Thus, the Commonwealth saves compared to a tender for each municipality, marking a turning point in the face of the challenge posed by the environmental requirements of the regulations in force, renewing, expanding and modernizing the services provided.
The contract commits the successful bidder to reuse domestic and commercial waste for reuse and recycling. This foresees reducing the remaining fraction to 50% at the end of the contract.

To separate organic matter (almost 30% of garbage) there will be three services: collection of domestic biowaste with controlled opening containers; collection from large producers, especially from restaurants and educational centers; and the concerted and controlled collection of pruning remains.
The UTE proposes to increase containerization by 69.14%, that all containers be metal, to incorporate the collection of rear cargo of light packaging and paper-cardboard containers, which will allow reaching more places, an agreed collection service for belongings and voluminous with two-compartment trucks and four mini mobile clean points for the free collection of special household waste,
In street cleaning, the services will coordinate sweeping, washing and mechanical and mixed clearing actions with frequencies according to sectors; There will be specific means at the main festivals and events and a cleaning device (including motorized) for bathing and coastal areas, depending on the season.
During the seven years, communication campaigns will be carried out to promote civility and recycling to achieve selective collection objectives.
