A total of 16 proposals aspire to become the poster for the 2024 Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival, after the deadline for receiving works at 11:59 p.m. last Friday, the 15th. The Festival Councilor, Javier Caraballero, thanked “the participation of all the people who have taken part in the contest, which will reveal the business card of the most important Carnival in the world.”
The councilor highlighted that, “one more year, Santa Cruz de Tenerife once again democratizes the creativity of its poster, opening the call to both design and fine arts professionals, emerging talents, and artists who contribute their creative vision.” In this sense, the councilor recalled that “the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is one of the few festivals in the world that has a gallery of posters that incorporates internationally recognized brands with new creators, something that guarantees that our festival is manufactured by everyone and all”, and that, in addition, “can be visited in the facilities of the Casa del Carnaval”.
Caraballero encourages “the carnival – and non-carnival – public to participate massively in the telematic voting that supports the next poster”, once the 10 finalist works that will go to the vote are known. Applicants have had 79 days to make their proposals inspired by La Televisión, the theme of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival for this edition, which will be held between January 12 and February 18.
The works remain guarded in the facilities of the Autonomous Organization for Festivals and Recreational Activities (Oafar), and will be submitted to the criteria of a dual voting system. The first of them will be the selection of the ten best proposals by the jury, which will take place this Friday. And the second will be an online vote.
The people in charge of scoring the works that have the greatest plastic or artistic quality, advertising or informative effectiveness about the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival are: the two-time winner of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival poster and designer of the set design of the 2024 edition, Nareme Melián; the Queen of the 2023 Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Adriana Peña; the illustrator and specialist in printing and engraving, Patricia Delgado; the president of the Valkirias rondalla, Vicky López, and the designer and illustrator Iván Retamas.
After this preselection, with a weight of 60% in the final ranking, an online popular voting process will be opened that will be communicated through social networks and corporate websites. This vote will have a value of 40% of the total. The final result will be obtained after the sum of both qualifications, with Oafar awarding a prize of 2,500 euros to the author of the winning poster.
Carnival House
On the other hand, the Santa Cruz Carnival House hosts two new temporary exhibitions that can be visited until March 31. This was announced yesterday by the CEO of the Development Society, Carmen Pérez, who visited this enclave together with the mayor of Fiestas, Javier Caraballero, and the designers of the Santa Cruz Carnival Jorge González and Frank Romero, authors of both temporary exhibitions.
Carmen Pérez explained that “these two temporary exhibitions, titled 10 years of Fantasia with Jorge González and Barbie dresses as the Carnival Queen, will be complemented with various free activities, among which are several talks by the designers themselves in which they will delve into in the themes of the samples.” To which she added that “this is an excellent opportunity to delve into the history of our Carnival and give voice to two of our most important designers.”
Designer Frank Romero highlighted that “the Barbie exhibition is 24 years old and is a tribute to all designers” and stressed that “it will be on display for six months at the Casa del Carnaval.” For his part, Jorge González reported that his exhibition “is a tour of all the fantasies that I have presented to the Santa Cruz Carnival since 2012 and includes three queens.” He pointed out that “we keep almost all the designs that we have presented over these 10 years, and when you see them as a whole you appreciate the great work that goes into each of those designs.”
In this way, the Suspi Room houses the temporary exhibition titled 10 years of Fantasies with Jorge González, made by the designer Jorge González and in which he shows his time at the Santa Cruz Carnival during the last 10 years presenting candidates for queens, and where you can see all the designs of their candidates for adult and child queens. This exhibition includes the three costumes of its adult queens, from 2015, 2017 and 2018, as well as some awards and newspaper publications with photographs of its proclaimed queens.
Likewise, the Multipurpose Room of the Casa del Carnaval hosts the exhibition called Barbie dresses as Queen of the Carnival, made by the designer of the Santa Cruz Carnival Frank Romero. These are 21 barbies dressed in the costumes of Carnival Queens, which aims to show a journey through the different locations of the Gala since 1935 and which shows the aesthetic and artistic evolution of this event. In addition, you can see a small tribute that they wanted to make, in collaboration with the designers, to the figure of Luis Dávila, an icon of the Santa Cruz Carnival.
Both exhibitions can be visited for free at the Casa del Carnaval until March 31, from Monday to Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and tickets can be purchased at the Web.
These exhibitions will be complemented by several talks by both designers. Thus, on October 5 and November 9, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Jorge González’s talks will take place, while on October 19 and November 23, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., talks with Frank Romero will be held. .
