The consolidation work on the ruins of the old church of San Agustín, in the center of La Laguna, continues to be stopped while waiting to receive “the modification of the work project carried out by the drafting architect,” according to the area councilor. of City Council Works, Adolfo Cordobés, which he hopes will be in the “next few days.”
The councilor explained that “several modifications have had to be made to the original project, mainly related to facilities and some adjustments that are common in this type of rehabilitation works as soon as work begins on the ground.”
Months ago, there was also talk that an adaptation had to be made to the current increase in prices of materials and transportation that is widely experienced throughout the sector. Once the area receives the modified project, “this must be approved by the Historic Center service of the Urban Planning Management and by the Heritage Commission of the Cabildo, to, finally, sign the contract with the company awarded the works. , so that the work can be restarted,” Adolfo Cordobés continued explaining. Therefore, at the moment, the new deadlines for opening this space to neighbors and visitors cannot yet be specified.
The works to recover the ruins of the old church, destroyed by a fire in 1964, and open them to the public began at the beginning of 2022, after having been awarded for 845,209 euros. A project that, as the City Council recalled at the time, dates back to 2005, although it was at the end of 2009 when the execution projects were delivered in the demolition and consolidation phase and in the rehabilitation phase. Even so, it was not until 2016 when the modification of the consolidation project was awarded, to adapt it to the current regulations that allow people to access the interior, delivered to the City Council in October of that same year, but its execution did not materialize until beginning of 2022, when work began. However, the general increase in prices in the construction sector and various necessary adjustments found during the course of the work have been causing a slowdown in the work, which remains stopped until the modification of the work is approved.
