From today, Tuesday until October 3, the Parliament of the Canary Islands hosts the solidarity exhibition ‘Volcano Project: a comic for La Palma’, coordinated by Patricio Ducha with the collaboration of the Canarian Cine Más Cómics Foundation.
This exhibition brings together the work of more than 170 cartoonists and illustrators who have donated their works to raise funds to benefit those affected by the eruption of the Tajogaite volcano, on the island of La Palma.
The president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez, inaugurated the exhibition on the day that marks two years since the start of the eruption. In his speech, he highlighted that “on this day, September 19, 2021, the earth opened in the La Palma municipality of El Paso. It was ten past two in the afternoon when lava began to erupt from the subsoil in the area. upper part of the Aridane Valley. The eruption lasted 85 days and kept the Canary Islands and the world in suspense. It devastated 1,218 hectares of land, 1,676 buildings, schools, churches, homes. It devastated lives, it devastated hopes, 74 kilometers of roads and more than 370 hectares of crops. The lava flows left an enormous trail of suffering in La Palma and generated a great physical and emotional impact, which still lasts.”
The president of the Chamber had words of recognition and support for those affected and stressed that “thousands of palm trees lost everything, and many Canarians and citizens from all corners of our country led the largest movements of solidarity towards the island of the Palm”.
Starting today, the Exhibition Hall of the Parliament of the Canary Islands hosts the exhibition that brings together a large part of the comics, cartoons and illustrations donated by these cartoonists and illustrators to raise funds to benefit the people affected by the volcano.
The Canarian Cine Más Cómics Foundation has made this exhibition possible and has also published a book, in two volumes, where all the participating works are compiled. This publication is for sale to continue raising funds and help improve life in the Aridane Valley,” Astrid Pérez announced during the opening.
In a message addressed to the palm trees and palm trees, Astrid Pérez wanted them to “know that we do not forget or stop thinking about what remains to be done for La Palma to recover everything it began to lose on September 19, 2021.”
Patricio Ducha recalled that all the benefits obtained from the sale of publications about this exhibition will go to those affected by the eruption, through the Spanish Red Cross. Francisco Pomares, from the Canarian Cine Más Cómics Foundation, said that this exhibition, “which opened for the first time at the Casa de la Cultura in El Paso just a year ago,” has the vocation of “touring all of the Canary Islands and, If possible, also travel to Madrid”.
The opening ceremony was also attended by the first vice president of the Canary Islands Parliament, Ana Oramas, and the second vice president of the Chamber, Gustavo Matos.
Among the artists participating in the exhibition are names such as Alicia Warhola, Ángel Hernández, Judith Gómez, Verónica MG, Eduardo González, Padylla, Morgan, Victor Jaubert or Ana Guadalupe, among other Canarian, national and international artists.
The exhibition hall of the Parliament of the Canary Islands remains open from Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., while on Saturdays it is only open between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. It is closed on Sundays.
