In recent weeks, the Animal Welfare Department of the Los Realejos City Council has started its first comprehensive sterilization program for feline colonies under the CER protocol, consisting of the capture, sterilization and return of those community cats “in order to guarantee their protection.” and well-being and to progressively reduce its population,” highlighted the councilor of the area, Josué Bacallado.
«The Royal City Council, based on the need for more specific attention, began this 2023-2027 mandate by launching its own Department of Animal Welfare, previously integrated into the Health area, providing it with a budget of 60,000 euros, which it distributes among the subsidy nominative to the Peludos Felices Association; the contract for the collection, custody and feeding of abandoned or helpless animals; the pest control contract, and that of this initiative to control feline colonies,” explained the mayor, Adolfo Gonzalezin a press release.
Bacallado pointed out that, “among the concerns that citizens convey to us in animal matters is the presence of certain colonies of cats in different environments of the municipality, now having a protocol for responsible action and also protected by recent regulations.” “in force, which allows us to progressively intervene in the control of these feline populations to prevent their growth, but always with the guarantee of animal protection.”
In response to this neighborhood demand, the Department of Animal Welfare has already started actions in the towns of La Cruz Santa and La Montaña, as well as in the area of Los Príncipes, on Avenida de Canary Islands or on Piris Street, in the area of La Carrera and Los Barros, where the presence of feline colonies has been detected and where captures, sterilizations and animals have already been returned to these places. In the near future this protocol will continue in other corners of the municipality.
