The work to stabilize the slope of San Marcos Beach will cost 800,000 euros. The works begin by enabling access for the passage of heavy machinery to be used in the installation of triple twist meshes before cleaning up the cliff. A protection barrier will also be installed for the parking lots and the Amarca building.
Last July, landslides were recorded that required an initial intervention that cost more than 15,000 euros. Subsequently, a study determined the risk level and general condition of the slope. Currently, the “emergency” intervention affects private land, the expense of which is carried out by subsidiary execution or by the partial transfer of the affected property, by virtue of the subsequent negotiation announced by the Councilor for Works of Icod de los Vinos, Jorge Gonzalez.
This was conveyed to the residents around San Marcos Beach, with whom he held a meeting to report the details of the action that is in progress, and which should be completed in eight months if there are no setbacks.
In it, the mayor of Icodense, Javier Sierra, explained that the Plenary gave urban planning approval to the Government of the Canary Islands to launch the beach remodeling project, a process that has been stuck since 2021. To do this, the City Council provisionally cedes the land to the regional Executive so that it can put out to tender the works and begin “this long-awaited reform, because we cannot wait a minute but for the beach to continue receding and becoming something that no Icodense wants. The councilor wants to recover this space as soon as possible for its use by residents and as a tourist offer.
