SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Aug. 29 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, and the acting Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, held a working meeting by videoconference on Tuesday in order to address mechanisms to strengthen coordination between administrations in the management of migratory flows in the Canary Islands route and in view of the foreseeable rise in the months of September and October due to the improvement in sea conditions.

Clavijo and Grande-Marlaska have reviewed the details of the latest arrivals in the archipelago and have shared the analyzes and projections carried out by experts from the Security Forces and Corps on the subject.

Thus, the head of the Canarian Executive conveyed to the head of the Interior the need to “extreme Canary-State relations in a matter as sensitive as migratory flows” and expressed his “concern” after the data recorded in August, where they have 2,283 people have been rescued, compared to the 1,075 that were rescued in the same month of the previous year.

In this sense, Grande-Marlaska pointed out that, thanks to the government’s migration policy, Spain managed to close 2022 with a 25.6 percent drop in irregular arrivals throughout the country, and a 29.7 percent reduction. percent in arrivals to the Canary Islands, collects a note from the Ministry.

Both officials have agreed on the need to continue deepening the in-depth work that has been carried out in this area and that involves effective cooperation with the countries of origin and transit and the joint police fight against criminal organizations that traffic in human beings. .

Fernando Clavijo also stressed the need for “the Canary Islands not to be left out of migration management and the migration policy of the Government of Spain”, not only in the powers of the Ministry of the Interior and Grande-Marlaska has promised to transfer the rest of ministry matters that are not the responsibility of the Interior.

Both the President of the Canary Islands and the Minister have pointed out the importance of monitoring the current situation in depth and in order to be able to adopt the necessary measures.

They have also agreed when it comes to underlining the need to deal “seriously and rigorously” with an issue of great importance to citizens and to avoid “simplistic messages” that distort the reality of the migratory phenomenon.
