SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Aug. 29 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Cabildo de Tenerife promotes Astrophysics studies on the island through the ‘Cosmolab’ project, an initiative that has a budget of approximately 64,000 euros and is developed by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC).
The objectives of the project are the training and training of teachers in Astrophysics, the use of telescopes, the preparation of teaching materials, and attention to the educational community through the project portal and support for activities in the centers.
The Minister of Innovation, Research and Development, Juan José Martínez, points out in a note that the subsidy “is a consequence of the Cabildo’s commitment to promoting scientific, technological and innovative culture through education, training and dissemination “.
The project began in 2018 “and it is important that it continue because the training and dissemination of Astrophysics represent the prelude to the future training and training of technologists and engineers in this field and is done hand in hand with the prestigious Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias” , exposes.
Juan José Martínez also explains that the initial contribution of the Cabildo was around 49,000 euros but they have decided to increase it by 15,000 more euros for the acquisition of new material.
“It is something that the IAC demands of us and we consider that it is necessary that they have the appropriate instruments to carry out their activities”, he points out.
Thus, two cameras will be acquired to obtain images of the Sun in H-alpha, a mount for a solar telescope, a mount to perform slit spectroscopy and an auto-guiding system for astrophotography workshops.
The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias develops a great activity in the field of dissemination of science, counting since its inception with a Communication and Scientific Culture Unit (UC3), which in addition to being in charge of the communication and dissemination of Astronomy and Astrophysics, she manages several educational projects nationally and internationally.
From the Cabildo they emphasize that the IAC is the only center in the Canary Islands that can offer astronomy training courses to teachers with speakers who are doctors and researchers in each of the thematic areas of the courses and it is also the only center in Europe that has with an exceptional infrastructure to carry out the telescope assembly courses and the corresponding daytime and nighttime observations: the Teide Observatory, on the island of Tenerife, and the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, on the island of La Palma, two astronomical observatories world class international
