SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Aug. 23 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Ombudsman has initiated an action before the General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions (Ministry of the Interior), following the complaint of the Deputy of the Common Canary Islands, Rafael Yanes, to inquire about the lack of running water supply in the Tenerife Penitentiary Center II as a consequence of the forest fire that affects Tenerife since last August 15.
The institution has received a communication from the Common Deputy stating that having received the complaint from the mother of one of the inmates in ‘Tenerife II’ assuring that they had been without a water supply for several days, both for consumption and for personal hygiene “and that from the management of the center they only provide them with a bottle of water per person and day”.
The Canarian commissioner requests the intervention of the Ombudsman as he lacks competence to act before the Central Administration and the Ombudsman has asked Penitentiary Institutions about the measures taken to alleviate the situation, the institution details in a note.
However, sources from Penitentiary Institutions have pointed out to Europa Press that the center has contracted 50,000 liters of water daily to meet the needs of inmates and workers and the first delivery has already been made since this Tuesday.
In addition, the Army, after the Canary Islands Government Delegation held talks with the Ministry of Defense, has brought 64,000 liters of water to the center overnight, although the forecast is to reach 80,000 liters.
Thus, the water supply has been reestablished and “for the moment” it enters the public network, although each inmate continues to be given three liters of water a day –two liter and a half bottles– and attention is paid to the “needs that arise”, specify the sources.
