The Ombudsman opens an investigation into the lack of water in the Tenerife II prison

The Ombudsman has initiated an action before the General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions, dependent on the Ministry of the Interior, to inquire about the lack of running water supply in the Tenerife II center as a result of the forest fire on the island.

The institution has received a communication from the Deputy of the Common in the Canary Islands, which states that having received the complaint from the mother of one of the inmates in Tenerife II, assuring that “they have been without a water supply for several days, both for consumption and for personal hygiene and that from the management of the center they only provide one bottle of water per person per day”.

The Canarian commissioner requests the intervention of the Ombudsman as he lacks competence to act before the Central Administration.

The Ombudsman has asked Penitentiary Institutions about the measures taken to alleviate the situation.

Sources from Penitentiary Institutions report that last night the Army supplied 64,000 liters of water through tanks to the Tenerife II center, after negotiations between the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands and the Ministry of Defense.

The idea, the sources indicate, is to reach 80,000 liters of water supplied by the Army.

In parallel, the management of the center has contracted the daily transport of 50,000 liters of water so that there is “a stable supply” in the coming days.

In addition, the sources of Penitentiary Institutions confirm that in Tenerife II water from the network arrives again.

For the rest, the sources insist that each inmate is supplied with three liters of bottled water a day, “beyond the needs that may arise”, that is to say: “whoever needs more, it is given.”
