The Council of Tenerife allocates 3.7 million euros, a figure similar to that of last year, for the 340 language immersion scholarships offered for the next three courses and in three modalities. The aid, aimed at students in the 3rd and 4th year of Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) and Baccalaureate, allows them to study in Ireland, Canada, the United States and France.
The Island Corporation opens the period for apply for the scholarships corresponding to the years 2024, 2025 and 2026. These aids allow students to learn languages in the four countries mentioned with annual and quarterly stays, among other conditions. The submission period has been open since yesterday and will end on October 13.
The three modalities that are offered are the academic year and quarterly scholarships, intended for students who will study 3rd of ESO during the 2023-2024 school year, and the Dual, intended for those who are also studying 4th of ESO next year.
Academic year scholarships. There are 30 scholarships that are intended for those who complete the 3rd year of Compulsory Secondary Education during the 2023-2024 school year. They consist of family accommodation and attendance at an educational center in Ireland for the entire duration of the 2024-2025 academic year for those who study the fourth level of Compulsory Secondary Education.
Quarterly scholarships. There are 210 scholarships distributed between Canada (120), Ireland (60) and France (30). They are intended for those who complete the 3rd year of Compulsory Secondary Education during the 2023-2024 school year. Like the previous ones, they consist of family accommodation and attendance at an educational center in the network of the country of destination during the duration of the program from the beginning of the 2024-2025 academic year by those who during the same course are in Fourth ESO.
Dual Scholarships. In this case there are 100 scholarships that are distributed in the United States (50) and Canada (50). It is a course with combined face-to-face and online characteristics aimed at obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in the United States or Canada. They are intended for those who, during the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 school periods, respectively attend the First and Second levels of Baccalaureate. Includes a stay of a minimum of four weeks in the corresponding country, during the summer vacation period between the two Baccalaureate courses. Those who complete the 4th year of Compulsory Secondary Education during the next school year 2023-2024 may apply for this scholarship. The information can be consulted at the electronic headquarters of the Cabildo (https://sede.tenerife.es) and at the island citizen service offices (https://www.tenerife.es/portalcabtfe/es/atencion-ciudadana).
Almost a thousand students. More than 900 students left last year for Ireland, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Canada to take advantage of the Language Immersion Scholarships (BIL) offered by the Cabildo de Tenerife through the Education and Youth area. The previous academic year, twice as many students traveled, given that the 2021-22 promotion departed at the beginning of the summer, which was unable to do so due to the pandemic. Subsequently, the students of the 2022-23 promotion left to attend the first quarter of the course in those countries.
Linguistic immersion. Linguistic or educational immersion is intensive exposure to a second language. To do this, the model involves residing in a community that speaks it regularly with the aim of learning it more quickly and thus achieving bilingualism among the learners. It is a process typical of language stays, whether in summer camps or as a student abroad -Erasmus program, language year, European double degree…- and of immigrants who are going to live in a new country, where they learn the language in daily life, although they can always have a complement of formal classes.
