The beaches of El Médano were reopened to the bathroom yesterday morning. The municipal government of Passion fruit de Abona adopted such a measure for the Central, Leocadio Machado and Playa Chica beaches after knowing the results of the counter-analysis carried out on the water that the quality “is suitable for bathing”.
In a statement, he assured that the indices of Escherichia coli bacteria (E.coli) were below the index (500 NMP/100 ml), as was that of enterococci (less than 185 NMP/100 ml), in the three points of the Granada coast.
Friday was when the three beaches were closed to the bathroom due to sewage contamination. From the Consistory it was reported that only the central beach exceeded the levels allowed for bathing, but as a precautiontion the security perimeter was extended from Playa Chica to Leocadio Machado, temporarily prohibiting bathing and raising the red flag. “This measure was taken to guarantee the safety of bathers”, pending the results of the samples taken on Friday, “which today (yesterday) have confirmed the good quality of the water,” reported the City hall.
Granadilla de Abona is one of the few municipalities in Canary Islands performing analyzes of the water of its coast twice a week, “which guarantees exhaustive knowledge of the quality of the water on the coast”. To do this, samples are taken from ten beaches: Cueva del Trigo, Ensenada Pelada, La Jaquita, El Cabezo, Playa Chica, central beach of El Médano, Leocadio Machado, La Tejita, El Chinchorro and Playa Grande de Los Abrigos.
The local Administration also recalls that it requested the Entemanser company, the awardee of the water supply service and responsible for maintenance of the sanitation network, a study on the real state of the network in the Central Beach area. At the same time, the municipal government requested an urgent meeting with the Insular Water Council of Tenerife (Ciatf) for the purpose of knowing the status of the works of the Granadilla de Abona treatment plant, a system that will comprehensively purify the wastewater of San Isidro and the entire coast.
The construction of the treatment plant of Los Letrados (WWTP) is carried out in San Isidro with a cost of 13,162,230 euros and an execution period of 36 months. It is part of the Granadilla wastewater purification and reuse system. Its commissioning is expected next year, provided that the established deadlines are met. It is essential to end discharges into the sea.
