The mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, accompanied by the councilor of the Anaga district, Gladis de León, and other councilors of the Corporation, presided over the act of recognition and honors for Isidoro Torres Díaz, a resident of the town of San Andrés, an artisan of recognized prestige both in Tenerife and in the Canary Islands and at the State level, which since yesterday gives its name to the Plaza de San Andrés, in this fishing town to which he was always linked, an act in which members of his family were present, who showed their gratitude for such a distinction that immortalizes and binds his name forever with his people.
Bermúdez highlighted that “his ingenuity and his ability to handle the reed, which he collected in the ravines of San Andrés, is already for the history of crafts in Santa Cruz, Tenerife, the Canary Islands and even at the state level, his designs in the making drums to capture moray eels” and stressed that “it is in the living memory of his neighbors, who every day saw Isidoro, at the door of his house, very close to here, using his hands and feet to sew with a reed a gadget of proven utility in the traditional art of fishing”.
His tireless dedication and work earned him numerous articles in publications specialized in crafts, in addition to many other mentions and distinctions in various newspapers, and he even came to occupy one of the covers of the international magazine National Geographic, always valuing his unique art. , fully integrated into the landscape of his life: the sea and, therefore, San Andrés.
To end his speech, the mayor of Santa Cruz thanked “all those who have fostered this recognition, those who supported with their signature this well-deserved award of honors” and stressed that “by this City Council, your City Council, receive the distinction and the honor with all the merits for his legacy, his delivery and the dissemination of our municipality, linked forever and ever, to the name of this square that from today will bear the name of Isidoro Torres Díaz”.
The file of honors for Isidoro Torres Díaz was promoted by the El Pescador Neighborhood Association, from San Andrés, which managed to collect almost 300 signatures, and the support of five groups, with which the City Council began the process to give his name to a corner of the town, a path that ended yesterday with the labeling of the Plaza de San Andrés with the name of this neighbor so loved by all.
