SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Aug. 3 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The occupancy of hotel and non-hotel establishments in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife reached 84.24 percent in the month of July, according to the results of the survey carried out by Ashotel through its Observatory of Tourism Competitiveness and Sustainable Development between on July 31 and August 3.

This occupation implies three points more than the closing of July 2022 and 16 points more than the reservations for this summer advanced in mid-June 2023, indicating from the tourist employers that this “wide difference of 16 points shows that the ‘last minute’ trend grows considerably”.

By islands, Tenerife registered the highest data, with an average occupancy rate of 84.66 percent, followed by El Hierro (79.57%), La Palma (74.68%) and La Gomera (71.44%). .

These data represent an increase in average occupations compared to July 2022 on the islands of Tenerife and La Gomera, while on La Palma and El Hierro it fell, although all the islands “experienced better figures” than those of the mid-term survey of June.

In this sense, La Palma continues another summer with a “significant volume” of closed squares in the tourist area of Puerto Naos due to the gases emanating from the volcano, which causes a lower accommodation capacity that also influences the “stable” operation of the “most important” European tour operators that work with the island.

Regarding La Gomera, they point out that the recession in the German market, its main foreign issuer, has been felt; while in the different areas of Tenerife the establishments in the south closed with an average of 86.86 percent, two points more than in July 2022; in the north it was 77.98 percent (nine points more) and in the metropolitan area it was 65.37 percent (one point more).

On the other hand, it is exposed that 50.7 percent of the associated establishments in the province affirm that their occupancy this July was higher than that of July 2022, while 28 percent indicate that it is lower and 22 percent equal to that of the same period last year. However, in relation to the pre-pandemic year, 2019, 48 percent consider that their occupation in July was higher, 36 percent that it was lower, and 16 percent that it was the same.

Finally, for this month of August 2023, those surveyed currently maintain their volume of reserves in the province at 82.5 percent, with this figure being 82.8 percent in Tenerife, and 77.9 percent in La Palma. , in La Gomera 75.5 percent and in El Hierro 69.3 percent.

In relation to these figures, Ashotel has shown its “satisfaction” because expectations have been exceeded since the beginning of summer, putting “the focus on how habits have changed” in reservations since the Covid pandemic.

He adds that there are “quite a lot” of the establishments surveyed that comment that the behavior of this summer is being “very last minute”, which is why they indicate that the previous reservations of the beginning of the summer for later months “are notably far” from the results at closing of month.

In this regard, they admit that inflation “has greatly affected” the costs of hotel operations but the desire to travel “continues after the hard years” of 2020 and 2021, so that in general terms tourists “keep spending even if they reduce their average stay a bit.

As for the main foreign markets, the German market is somewhat resentful, due to the economic recession the country is experiencing, a circumstance that they say “is especially noticeable” in La Gomera, while the British market is experiencing positive behavior.
