SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, July 31 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, has promised to recover the practice of water sports after a visit to the Marine Sports Center of Tenerife (Cidemat), a facility that remains closed due to the serious deterioration of the building.
In addition to Rosa Dávila, the visit was attended by the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo; the mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez; the vice president of the Cabildo, Lope Afonso, as well as the insular and municipal Sports managers, Yolanda Moliné and Alicia Cebrián.
The president of the Cabildo affirmed that this is “a commitment and a debt that the Island Corporation has with the city of Santa Cruz and with Tenerife.” “At the time, an agreement was signed for the Cabildo to rehabilitate the Cidemat, but it has not been carried out. In 2020, the previous Corporation closed the Center due to structural problems and did not provide an alternative for the practice of nautical sports,” asserted.
“In the first place, we resume the commitment that is signed by the Cabildo with the rest of the administrations -Port Authority and Santa Cruz City Council- for the rehabilitation of the Cidemat. The basic project is already in place and in the medium term we will look for alternatives so that they can be carried out water sports in the capital of Tenerife. We will go very quickly, but it is difficult to give an exact date. We are already at work”, explained Dávila, who advanced that a meeting will be held next week to give this performance a boost.
For his part, Fernando Clavijo pointed out that they are here “to fulfill the commitments that were signed.” “This is an important work for Santa Cruz, for Tenerife and for the Government of the Canary Islands. The only space where you can practice and learn water sports in a public way is the Cidemat. We protest against this closure without giving any kind of alternatives. They have the full support of the Government of the Canary Islands to reactivate this facility with the investment made in the facility,” he said.
The mayor of San Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, welcomed the visit to Cidemat by both the President of the Government of the Canary Islands and the President of the Cabildo “because it fills us with illusion and hope in a center that closed in 2020 and fired its 16 workers The idea is to reopen the center as soon as possible and, meanwhile, provide a temporary solution to the users of a center that was inaugurated in 1991, through which more than 100,000 people passed and that I am convinced that we will enjoy again,” he added.
The vice president of the Cabildo, Lope Afonso, pointed out that today “it was time to demonstrate that the commitments must be met and, for this reason, Santa Cruz and Tenerife will once again have their Cidemat in the coming years.” “It is time to do things judiciously and with a head, and the first obligation was to come hand in hand with all the Administrations that are involved in this installation. There is a lot of work ahead, but we have started by stepping on the ground and showing interest and commitment with a facility that was unjustly abandoned”, he added.
