Routes with 138 airports from 27 countries support tourism in Tenerife

Tenerife connects with 138 airports in 27 countries through 53 airlines that brought 4,406,877 passengers to the island in the first half of this year. An increase of 18% compared to the previous year and 6.9% higher than the same period in 2019. Travelers arrived, in addition to the national sphere, both from traditional and powerful source markets, the United Kingdom or Germany, as well as from other emerging markets , read United States. connectivity. A key word because it is the fundamental factor and the basis for the advancement of the insular tourism sector. The driving force has been threatened this week by the announcement by Aena (Spanish Airports and Air Navigation) of an upcoming 4.1% rise in airport taxes. The news fell like a bomb because this increase, widely rejected, in the absence of exact quantification will eliminate some routes and cause economic losses. In addition, the measure comes in full recovery as shown by the statistical data recorded in the first half of the year.

Between January and June 2023, according to the report prepared by the Tenerife Tourism Research Department, the Island maintained connectivity with 27 markets, the equivalent of countries, four less than in the same period of 2019 when there were 31. This difference It is based, according to the study, on the cessation of flights from Senegal, Israel, Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. The novelty is the attractive connection with the United States – a flight to New York during the United Airlines summer season – that did not exist.

more airports

During this first semester, the Island has connected with 138 airports around the world, four more than in the same period of the previous year, through the operations of 53 companies. The balance of traffic to Tenerife between January and June reached 4,406,877 passengers, 18% more than the previous year and 6.9% higher than June 2019.

Ten companies of the 53 share the largest piece of the pie, since they transported 3,730,590 people from the issuing airports abroad or national aerodromes, including inter-island routes, in the analyzed period. Ryanair, Binter Canarias and Jet2 occupy the podium of this ranking. It should be remembered that it includes all types of passengers, also residents, foreigners or not, on the Island or in other Canary Islands. Turismo de Tenerife finalizes the analysis on the number of people staying in hotels and apartments in the first half of the year.

national traffic

National traffic, with 1,682,486 passengers, rose 17.6% compared to 2022 and 4.8% over 2019. Arrivals from the Peninsula, with 993,946 passengers, increased 19% and 8.7%, respectively on both references. Regarding the inter-island movement, the figure up to June offers 688,540 people, accumulating 15.5% more in the year and just 0.4% below the records of 2019.

international movement

Since September 2022, the monthly records of foreign flow exceed those of four years ago. In the Archipelago as a whole, Tenerife holds a share of 38.4% of the total traffic; Gran Canaria receives 28.9%.

forecasts

The analysis details the forecasts of regular arrival capacity in Tenerife in the summer already underway and winter 23-24. For the first, the offer is almost 5.4 million places, 5.5% more than in summer 2022. It also exceeds that of 2019, with an 8.2% increase. By origin, from national airports a growth of 5.1% accumulates. The reason is the notable improvement from inter-island (+8.4%), as well as the offer of seats from those from the Peninsula (+2.4%). Regarding the international offer, with 2.8 million places, the expected increase is 5.8%.

With these figures, the records of national places of the summer prior to the pandemic are practically equal, while the international offer would rise by +17.4%. For winter 23-24, the forecast is that the offer will exceed 4.4 million regular arrival places, a growth of 7.5% compared to the previous winter and 31.3% over that of the pre-pandemic in 2019.

June to June

Tenerife received 691,826 passengers in June, 7.4% more than the previous year (47,892) and +3.8% over 2019. Arrivals to the Island represented 39% of the total for the Canary Islands. National traffic, 300,413 passengers, was 6.4% above the 2o22 (+5.6% for the peninsular and +7.5% for the inter-island).

Source markets

The positive trend continues in the main foreign source markets. Thus, arrivals from the United Kingdom in the first semester grew by 18.4% compared to the previous year, and by 10.8% over 2019. Since April 2022, the growth is continuous compared to the records of 2019. From Germany 399,196 passengers arrived, 23.5% more than in the same period of the previous year, although 6.8% below 2019. Regarding the French market, the data shows a positive evolution since mid-2021. It maintains dynamism with 24% more traffic than 2019 and a growth of 70.7% in the year-on-year comparison. Italian tourism also seems to be in clear recovery. In 2023 it stabilizes at figures similar to 2022, when it already exceeded the records of 2019. Until June it closed with a growth of 2%, driven by some very good results in January. The balance 45% more traffic than before covid-19.
