A tourist scam in the south of Tenerife leads the National Police to meet with consular representatives from almost 20 countries



The National Police held an informative and cooperation meeting with 19 representatives of the accredited Consular Corps in the province of Tenerife on July 19 at the Provincial Police Station of Santa Cruz de Tenerife to channel cooperation and assistance to tourists scammed in the south of Tenerife, within the framework of Operation Delhi.

At that meeting, chaired by the provincial commissioner, the representatives of the Consular Corps of Italy, Russia, Finland, Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Norway, Mexico, Honduras, Venezuela, Argentina, Ecuador, Hungary, Denmark, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic were informed of the result of said operation.

The agents, within the framework of the Delhi operation, dismantled a criminal organization based in the south of Tenerife, dedicated to committing scams against elderly European tourists, using a complex network of small stores selling technology items for this purpose.

In total, 33 people were arrested for the alleged authorship of the crimes of criminal organization, money laundering and fraud. During the operation, more than 700,000 euros in cash were seized and a capital of more than 900,000 euros distributed in more than 300 bank accounts and 42 real estate properties was blocked.

The agents, during the informative meeting, stressed to the consular representatives the importance of transferring the citizens of their respective countries that the National Police, through the email account sctenerife.bppjudef@policia.eshas set up a help and advice channel for victims of the scams investigated within the framework of Operation Delhi.

The agents themselves will attend to them and inform them on how to proceed depending on the specific situation of each one of them, the police force has highlighted.

Currently, the investigators have evidence of a number of complaints that are much lower than the real one. Thanks to this initiative, a significant number of criminal acts could be clarified that remain in the dark number of crime and the victims, opt to have the economic damage that was caused to them be repaired, concludes the Police.
