Last Sunday’s electoral day has left us evidence in the municipality of La Laguna and it is the consolidation of the socialist force in the streets of Aguere. As in 2019, it was the political formation with the most votes, but this time increasing its numbers with 6,862 more votes compared to the last elections (28,866 in total).
These figures strengthen the leadership of the general secretary of the lagoon socialists and mayor, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, who recently obtained the support of the citizenry by revalidating his victory in the local elections, thanks to the 23,472 votes that were registered last May.
La Laguna has become in recent years a fundamental stronghold of the Socialist Party on the island of Tenerife, and in the Canary Islands in general, taking into account that it is one of the municipalities with the largest population and one of the few places on the islands cataloged as Historical Heritage of Humanity, among other recognitions. For all these reasons, the achievements accumulated by Luis Yeray, as mayor, and his team in little more than one term, acquire greater relevance.
This evolution of the Laguna PSOE, and more specifically in the national elections, is not only reflected in the total number of votes, but also in the distance with the rest of the political parties. In the results of last Sunday, the Socialist Party has achieved more than 3,000 votes difference with respect to the Popular Party, despite the expected national surge from the right, and 16,234 votes more than the Canary Coalition.
It is the Tenerife municipality that obtained the greatest distance in favor of the PSOE compared to the rest of the political forces in these general elections. As an example, in other towns where the PSOE was victorious, such as Guía de Isora or Puerto de la Cruz, the difference did not reach a thousand votes, while in La Laguna the barrier of 3,000 was exceeded.
At the local level, in the last commissions in May, not only was the victory achieved, but a significant increase in socialist votes was registered in La Laguna (6,869 more than in 2019). The distances with respect to the second force with the most votes, Coalición Canaria, were more than 3,700 votes. The national wave of the PP was not reflected on this occasion either, since a difference of 14,642 votes was achieved between socialists and popular, when in 2019 it was 11,192. That is to say, not only were the distances in the municipality not shortened, but they were widened in favor of the La Laguna left.
This evolution has been possible thanks to the group of people that make up the PSOE in La Laguna, headed by Luis Yeray Gutiérrez as mayor, and the great advances that have been made in these four years in matters as important as the environment, culture, the fight against climate change, security, festivals, municipal services or citizen participation, among others.
