The archaeobotanist Paloma Vidal and the archaeologist Salvador Pardo, both from the University of La Laguna, have resumed this Monday the investigation in the Cave of the Heads de Tegueste to obtain a complete paleoenvironmental sequence of one of the reference archaeological sites in Tenerife.
The General Directorate of Cultural Heritage has reported in a statement that the multidisciplinary team of the University of La Laguna (ULL) will work until July 30 to continue the field research that began last April in the Cueva de los Cabezazos .
Given that one of the objectives of the project is the archeology training of the ULL History Degree students, in this first campaign the field work has been divided into two phases so that the student body can participate in the holiday periods.
Thus, at Easter five volunteers collaborated and during the summer holidays there are ten.
The Tegueste City Council has ceded the municipal hostel so that the work team, made up mainly of pre- and post-doctoral researchers from the ULL but also specialists from other international academic institutions, can stay at these facilities during field work.
In parallel, the archaeological materials that have been recovered are being analyzed with the application of new methodologies in the Prehistory Laboratory of the Department of Geography and History of the ULL.
The Cueva de los Cabezazos belongs to a group of natural cavities in the Barranco del Agua de Dios in Tegueste, used by the aboriginal society as burial and habitation spaces.
In addition, this archaeological zone is one of the Guanche settlements that has provided the most information about the pre-European era of the island.
To disseminate and bring the importance of the Cueva de los Cabezazos closer to the public, the Department of Historical, Artistic and Identity Heritage of the Tegueste City Council has convened an open day at the excavation area for this Saturday.
Specifically, the activity “Open by excavation” will consist of guided tours, in small groups of six to eight people guided by the work team of the University of La Laguna from the fork path to the cave.
