SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, July 10 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of the Cabildo de La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, has assumed this Monday the rotating presidency of the Canary Island Federation (Fecai) during an extraordinary assembly in which the rest of the island presidents participated and which was the first meeting of these characteristics after the constitution of the councils.

During the course of the session, a unanimous position was agreed against the proposal of the General Directorate of Civil Aviation to start the privatization of the air traffic control services of the main Canarian airports.

As detailed by Curbelo, this measure “goes against the public interest, the quality and the security of these strategic infrastructures, which were the entry and exit gate of more than 43 million passengers during the past year.”

Thus, he explained that the seven island councils have appealed to maintain the public service that is currently provided at all airports, although the proposal to privatize the control towers initially affects the two airports in Tenerife and the one in Gran Canaria.

“If we want to structure, unite and strengthen quality, both the airports and the ports of the Canary Islands must provide their services from public management,” he said.

Curbelo explained that the limitations involved in maintaining the AFIS system at the El Hierro and La Gomera airports were also addressed, as well as the problems regarding operations at the Port of Los Cristianos, in view of the summer months.

In this sense, he advanced that work is being done on a proposal to, as a priority, agree on measures with the shipping companies that avoid coincidence in departures and arrivals, while actions are planned regarding connectivity between the port area and the southern highway. .

COORDINATION WITH THE CANARY GOVERNMENT

The insular presidents opted to intensify the dialogue with the Government of the Canary Islands, through the establishment of periodic meetings. In this way, Curbelo assured, progress will be made in joint proposals regarding taxation or the development of the Fdcan.

“The councils are the governments of each island and I am convinced that we can help a lot in the management of the autonomous Executive,” he said.
