Arona increases this summer the number of beaches on its coast where the Blue Flag flies and goes from two to three points. Until now, it was hoisted on the beaches of Las Vistas as well as in El Camisón, now it also shines on the Los Cristianos beachwhere it had not done so since 2016.
This morning, the mayoress Fátima Lemes, together with the first deputy mayor and councilor for the Environment, Clari Pérez, raised the flag again, on the main beach of the tourist center of Los Cristianos. An act in which other members of the Corporation were also present. This international award given by the Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (Adeac) certifies the quality of the waters, the safety and the high level of the services offered in these areas of the coast.
Lemes assures that “this Blue Flag is a symbol of commitment on the part of the municipality to continue making an effort to improve safety, beach services and work more on environmental matters; the objective is to access tourist excellence, something fundamental for an international destination such as Arona”.
“We want to recognize the commendable work that the beach maintenance personnel and those who provide surveillance and adapted bathroom services do every day, because without them Arona would not have these flags”, explained the Councilor for the Environment.
The Blue Flag is a symbol of quality and safety that guarantees that the places that have it are sustainable, safe and reliable tourist destinations, which meet strict criteria of excellent water quality, environmental management, legality, accessibility and prevention, agreed upon internationally.
In this sense, the mayoress of Arona points out that “our municipality has to focus on improving tourist services and their quality. The municipality has more than 15 kilometers of coastline with important bathing areas that are highly frequented by residents and tourists, and which are also a draw for hundreds of athletes who enjoy surfing, diving or, for example, swimming in open water.”
Water quality, accessibility and safety
In order to maintain and certify the quality of the waters, analytical controls and sample collection are carried out every two weeks on the three beaches where the Blue Flag flies. This continuous monitoring makes it possible to identify areas of possible spills and to act quickly. In this way, in the last four years it has been possible to guarantee an average excellent water quality, a basic condition to qualify for the Blue Flag.
Likewise, it is also an essential requirement to ensure universal accessibility. A condition of which the Arona coastline is an example. The municipality has the longest accessible promenade in Europe, from which you can access the award-winning beaches.
Each of them is equipped with walkways, platforms, pergolas, showers and toilets that guarantee universal access. The adapted bathroom service is also offered on Las Vistas beach free of charge throughout the year, while Los Cristianos beach it doubles in the months of July and August.
Arona has also been, in terms of security, one of the first municipalities on the Island to comply with current security regulations, making available to the Prevention, Rescue, Salvage and Assistance Service, personal and material resources depending on the degree of protection of the beach, and thus guarantee these services every day of the year.
Lastly, the municipality also guarantees the correct cleaning and management of waste, preventive and corrective maintenance of the beaches, as well as carrying out environmental communication and awareness campaigns on the Arona coast.
