The Ministry of Culture and Sport, within the framework of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, has organized the conference ‘Culture and Videogames: Conference on European policies on videogames and virtual environments’ that will take place on 12 and 13 July in Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA), in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
With this meeting, of a professional nature and international projection, the Ministry of Culture and Sports celebrates the first of a series of technical meetings that will take place, in the fields of culture and sports, throughout the six months that Spain has the presidency of the European Union.
The event brings together industry professionals and representatives of member states and European institutions, as well as the associative and academic fields linked to the sector, around different discussion tables in which topics such as the cultural value of the video game sector will be addressed. , its promotion through public policies, the attraction of talent or the existence and future of virtual worlds.
In addition, during the conference the main results of the pilot project ‘Understanding the Value of a European Games Society’, promoted by the European Parliament and the European Commission, and executed by a consortium led by Ecorys, will be presented.
The video game sector is one of the most dynamic creative and cultural industries that are consolidating internationally, offering infinite possibilities for development, the ministry points out in a note.
It was declared a cultural industry by the Culture Commission of the Congress of Deputies in 2009, and since then it has been included in successive plans to promote cultural and creative industries drawn up by the Ministry of Culture and Sports.
In addition, at the request of Spain, the Council of the European Union included in 2022 the video game industry within the priority creative sectors for Europe.
Specifically, Europe represents one of the main international video game markets, with a value close to 23,480 million euros in 2022.
In addition, it is estimated that 4,600 companies dedicate their activity to this industry, contributing to a world market that is constantly growing and that in 2022 presented revenues of 179,000 million euros.
For its part, the Spanish market is the fifth largest video game market in Europe.
The Ministry of Culture and Sports is making a “strong commitment” to promote and strengthen the sector, working to respond to some of its current challenges, including improving financing systems, reducing business polarization, improving the competitiveness of the Spanish industry in the international market or reduce the gender gap, one of the main challenges of the sector.
