the nationalist Rosa Davila She broke a glass ceiling for many Tenerife women when she was proclaimed last Monday as the first female president in the history of the Cabildo since its founding in 1913. He did not forget or hesitate in his first institutional speech to wink at them. In this sense, the island leader of Canarian Coalition valued: “My election as the first woman to hold this position is not only a personal achievement, but also a symbol of progress and equity in our society. Dávila was preceded by 31 presidents, although only 28 men, since Francisco La Roche, Américo López and José Miguel Galván Bello repeated their mandate in two stages.

Dávila insisted that his accession to office “is a reminder that talent and leadership ability have no gender.” He delved into the fact that “women deserve, we deserve, to have an equal role in decision-making and in building our future.”

She encouraged all the women: “I tell you that there are no limits to what they can achieve. Don’t be afraid to dream big and fight for your goals.”

“We will reach Mars”

During the campaign of elections and in several subsequent acts, Rosa Dávila has already recorded her commitment in this area. For example, with phrases as loud as the one she uttered on June 9: “Women will get to Mars if we help each other.”

The then candidate for island president and vice president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands stated during the Networking and Leadership Meeting organized by BPW Canary Islandsbefore more than a hundred businesswomen and professionals that the alliance of women will allow to shake hands with others from the spaces of power.

He considers that “it is not only a personal achievement but also a symbol”

Dávila then reflected on all the challenges that lie ahead, which remain absolutely valid after his address last Monday. He noted that “I have never met women who were adversaries; quite the contrary, they have been influential women who have helped me, have served as a reference for my party (Canary Coalition) and others, who have inspired me”.

He did not forget to refer to “We also have a challenge in training so that boys and girls normalize the presence of women in all circumstances of life.”

davila has a duty to all the people of Tenerife, but in a special way also to the women of Tenerife. As they reminded him in that forum “we took advantage of the presence of the next president of the Cabildo, the first in more than 100 years of history -a prediction fulfilled-, to wrest from her the commitment that they take us into account in the island’s decision-making and participation bodies ».

The already president attended the conclusions of the meeting and listened to the demands of the women: «We want to continue denouncing the inequality between men and women, not turn a blind eye. Face inequality in all its magnitude: the wage gap, the underrepresentation of women in management positions, in careers, family reconciliation, etc. She has taken good note.
