The ethnographic rescue activity “Al Paso de la Cumbre 2023” once again successfully commemorated the traditional barter in the celebration of its 16th edition, which took place last Sunday, July 2, and had more than 100 extras who, dressed in Traditional clothing of yesteryear, they traveled different paths in San Francisco de La Montañeta, San José de Los Llanos and Santiago del Teide to stage the old barter system that was carried out on the roads of the island until the middle of the 20th century.
Said activity, whose “manners and humor” is not lacking in each of its editions, it was organized by the Santiago del Teide City Council in collaboration with the El Tanque and Garachico City Councils, as well as the Tenerife Rural Foundation and the Tenerife Cabildo.
Regarding its historical context, it is an ethnographic rescue activity that has its raison d’être in the homage to the Canarian generations that traveled the roads and paths of the archipelago looking for family livelihood.
Thus, on this occasion, it had the participation of more than 100 people who, arriving from different parts of the island and dressed in the typical clothing of the time, traveled the paths of the summit with numerous utensils, implements, materials, etc. that they were used to carry out all this work of commercial exchange of the time; with the participation, among others, of the Uzapa Mountaineers Cultural Association; group of residents of San Juan de la Rambla; Casilda Women’s Association; Southern Heritage; Nivaria Mountaineers Cultural Association; Isoranas Arcoiris Association of Women; Dance Workshops of Santiago del Teide; Parranda del Ron of the EMF of Arona; Theater Group for the Elderly of Santiago del Teide; etc
Finally, one of the main objectives of this cultural initiative consists of the revaluation of the products that were part of the exchange system, influencing the social relations that were established as a result of these commercial transactions; highlighting that, like every edition, it had 3 staging areas: San Francisco de La Montañeta, San José de Los Llanos and, finally, the Plaza de Santiago del Teide, where the participants could enjoy the performance of the group ” Paradise” and a great lunch.
