Rosa Dávila, the first woman to preside over the Cabildo de Tenerife in its 110-year history

Rosa Davila (Canarian Coalition), Diploma in Economics and Business Sciences from the University of La Laguna, 52 years oldhas become this Monday the first woman to chair Council of Tenerife in its 110 years of history. The nationalist leader has achieved in the second extraordinary plenary session celebrates this Monday morning becoming the most voted candidate for the Presidency18 in favor (those of CC and PP) and 12 abstentions.

After the vote, Dávila has promised her position as president of the Island Corporation and has received the baton from the previous presidentPedro Martin, who took office last Tuesday, as a representative of the force with the most votes (PSOE), but at the end of his speech he resigned from officein a unprecedented decision in the history of the Tenerife Council.

Pedro Martín’s decision avoided the motion of censure that CC and PP had prepared and forced the holding of two plenary sessions this Monday morning. In the first, the resignation of Pedro Martín was made knownin a plenary session in which the First Vice President, Berta Pérez, held the Presidency of this extraordinary session.

In the second plenaryheld immediately after, there was the vote that has made Rosa Dávila the first woman at the head of the Island Corporation. Davila has one extensive political experience. She was Councilor for the Environment and Quality of Life of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council between 1996 and 1999. In addition, she was deputy mayor and head of Human Resources in 1999. Later she was appointed general director of the Canarian Women’s Institute, a position she holds until 2003, when he became the General Directorate of Transport until 2015.

In 2015 she was Minister of Finance of the Government of the Canary Islands, becoming the first woman to hold this position. Subsequently, after the Elections to the Parliament of the Canary Islands in 2019, she was elected second vice president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, a position that she has held until today.

The socialist Pedro Martin has wished “the best” to the new president and has recalled “the will of the facilities in the transfer of powers”. He also pointed out the latest decisions implemented in the last days from the renovation of the bathrooms in the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium to the fire-fighting plan or the European recovery funds. Do not forget the resolution of labor disputes such as the tram. It guarantees a “responsible” opposition that “seeks the best for Tenerife”.

Lope Afonso, number one on the PP list for the Cabildo and who will be vice president of Rosa Dávilaappreciates “the normality” in the transition and trusts “in a climate of understanding that ends the feeling of conflict and tension“. Afonso offered an “outstretched hand” to Psoe and Vox. He qualifies these past days of uncertainty. He concluded by promising “useful work commitment” and vindicated “Tenerifiism away from any other consideration.” “Tenerife ppr above all else,” he concluded.

Rosa Dávila spoke of “honor, commitment, pride and emotion”. Showed your appreciation to the workers of the Cabildo, to the citizens who supported CC and PP “to begin a new era” and to Pedro Martín “for the facilities that he has provided for the transition.” He promised to “work for everyone” thanks to the “solid and stable agreement with the PP”.

The nationalist leader also had words of gratitude “for the work and generosity” of her new government partner, the leader of the popular Tenerife Lopez Afonso. He underlined “the challenge but also the strengths” of this new challenge of presiding over the Cabildo de Tenerife. Employment for all, recovery of Tenerife’s leadership, equal opportunities and social justice were some of the keys that he mentioned in his new career as head of the Island Corporation.
