It is nothing new or novel, that the second decision of our politicians, after the government pacts to form the new local corporations, is to raise the salary, and not because it is now about balancing the CPI, but because they have that power that many times collides with the hardships that its administrators go through. Not even the limit established in its day for the salaries of mayors in relation to the population of their municipality has lightened the burdens of public finances. The excessive spending would not be on the mayors, but on those councilors who earn as much as a mayor.
But there are ups and ups. In Guimarwith a pact in which United Sí Podemos is immersed, it has called attention that the increase is 10,000 euros per year for the mayor Gustavo Perez (58,080 euros) and 46,500 euros for seven deputy mayors and councillors.
Only Airam Puerta, will charge an additional 830.36 euros per month, to reach that figure by having 75% partial dedication, as will Juan Delgado, both to be able to continue carrying out their engineering and hardware activities, respectively. Only two of the 11 councilors will not be released.
In total, the sum of the 14 annual salaries of the Government group totals 430,080 euros per year, but if we add the six trusted staff members -who can reach seven-, who will each receive 29,540.70 euros, the cost to public coffers amounts to 607,324 euros, two hundred thousand more than the previous mandate.
Mayor Gustavo Pérez (CC), admits that “this increase must be explained very well” and among the reasons he alludes to justify the size of the increase, he refers to the increase in the population of the municipality (it has exceeded 21,000 inhabitants), the growing evolution of the municipal budget and of human resources within the City Council.
It must be remembered that this same pact, on this occasion only formed by PSOE and CC, led an unprecedented decision four years ago, that of setting the mayors’ salaries – the Mayor’s Office was shared for two years each, Gustavo Pérez and Airam Puerta- with partial dedication to 95%, a decision that was revoked by the Justice. Then Pérez and Puerta received 48,101.48 euros, almost five thousand euros less than what the popular Luisi Castro received in the 2015-2019 term.
The councilors had an allocation of 36,276.52 euros, just over ten thousand euros less than what they will receive in this mandate.
This list of salaries will go to an extraordinary plenary session this Wednesday, at 8.30 in the morning, for approval.

The rise in salaries in the Candelaria government group, which is in the same bracket of fees (municipalities of 10,001 to 50,000 inhabitants), has also been highlighted. Thus, the mayoress Mari Brito gets the maximum allowed (62,000 euros), seven thousand euros more than in the previous term, while the mayor of Social Services continues to be the second best paid with 60,000 euros, because she is recognized for the amounts she would charge for seniority as a nurse
Jorge Baute, the first deputy mayor, at 75% partial dedication – like the Councilor for the Treasury, Airam Pérez Chinea – will receive 47,000 euros. The salary of the rest of the councilors will be between 42,000 and 45,000 euros gross per year in 14 payments. Candelaria will also have seven trusted staff members, with an average of 30,000 euros per year.
