the educational program Canary Islands: a volcanic window in the Atlantic will be present this coming week in the municipality of El Rosarioin the House of Culture, for bring volcanoes and volcanic risk management closer to society. Organized by the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (INVOLCAN), dependent on the Cabildo de Tenerifethe educational program will take place on days July 4, 5 and 6 from 7:00 p.m.
three days of free assistance, Aimed at the general public, although attendance is especially recommended for all persons linked to the security and emergency operation, both professionals and volunteers, residing in the municipality.
Canary Islands: a volcanic window in the Atlantic arises from the need to regularly inform and educate the citizens residing in the Canary Islands about the different dangers associated with the volcanic phenomenon and the actions that must be completed to reduce the volcanic risk. With this, the recommendations described by the Special Plan for Civil Protection and Emergency Attention due to Volcanic Risk in the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (PEVOLCA) and the Island Action Plan against the Volcanic Risk of Tenerife are fulfilled.
The ultimate goal of this program is contribute to making the Canary Islands a better informed and organized community in the face of volcanic risk to become much less vulnerable than a community that does not know or ignore the volcanic threats that surround it, and does not organize itself to respond to them.
The financing for the development of these activities on the island is channeled thanks to the project Strengthening the resilience of the municipalities of Tenerife against volcanic risk, co-financed by the Council of Tenerife and the Technological and Renewable Energies Institute (ITER). In this new edition, the educational program has the collaboration of the Volcanological Society of Spain (SVE) and the Canary Association of Volcanology (ACANVOL) as well as that of the 31 municipalities that will host the sessions.
Specific objectives
The first day is intended inform and educate attendees about the different dangers associated with the volcanic phenomenon through the projection of a documentary produced by INVOLCAN and Televisión Española in the Canary Islands Understanding Volcanic Hazards, with a subsequent debate on the content of the documentary and the participation of attendees in a question and answer game known as the Volcanic Trivial in order to strengthen their knowledge and learning about the different volcanic hazards.
The purpose of the second day is to inform and educate the audience on the conceptual difference between volcanic hazard and volcanic risk by screening the documentary Reducir el Riesgo Volcánico, edited by the Association of Chemistry and Volcanology of the interior of the Earth (IAVCEI) and the Organization of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco). After the screening, a debate with the audience will be promoted, as well as the participation of the attendees in a second Volcanic Trivial.
On the third day, attendees will learn that in our territory they can find traces of all the different hazards associated with the volcanic phenomenon that have been revealed on the first day, as well as the frequency with which these various volcanic hazards occur. Likewise, on this third day, it is intended that attendees learn how Canary Islands society, as a whole, is materializing the volcanic risk management in the Canary Islands and the degree of compliance with the actions recommended by the scientific community and policy international for this purpose. As in the previous days, the attendees will participate in a third Volcanic Trivial in order to strengthen their knowledge and learning about the volcanic phenomenon and the management of volcanic risk in the Canary Islands.
